Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards will serve as the speaker for the Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) 2016 Commencement Saturday, May 7, 2016, at 4 p.m., in Kiefer Lakefront Arena.

5/4/2016 SU Ag Center set for 2016 school garden graduation ceremony, May 4
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center will hold a graduation ceremony for students participating in the "Eradicating Food Deserts through the Development of School Gardens" project. The event will recognize participants from Southern University Laboratory School, Scotlandville Magnet High School, and Scotlandville Pre-Engineering Academy on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, from 9 a.m. - noon, A. O. Williams Hall.

4/30/2016 SU and LSU Ag Centers Small Ruminant Field Day set for April 30
The Southern University Ag Center, along with the LSU AgCenter, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and the Kentwood Co-op, will host a small ruminant field day on April 30, 3016, at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Skip Bertman Drive, on the LSU campus, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

4/29/2016 SU alumna to be recognized at White House event for ‘great educators across the country’
Duplessis Primary School master teacher Shaneka Burnett will travel to Washington, D.C. to attend a May 3, 2016, event at the White House recognizing the National Teacher of the Year, State Teachers of the Year and "great educators across the country." Burnett was recommended for this honor by the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET).

4/23/2016 SU computer science grad student wins La. Academy of Sciences best poster presentation award
Saritha Rakam, a graduate student from the SU Baton Rouge Department of Computer Science, achieved the best graduate poster presentation award in the division of computer science, math, and statistics and material sciences and engineering, during the 90th Annual Meeting of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences at Louisiana State University Alexandria, April 23, 2016.

4/2/2016 SU urban forestry student wins first place in National MANRRS Contest
Southern University urban forestry major Joshua Simon won first place in the National Society for Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Undergraduate Written Essay Contest. Simon, a junior from Morganza attended the National MANRRS 31st Annual Career Fair and Training Conference in Jacksonville, Florida, March 30 - April 2, 2016.

4/25/2016 SUBR music student follows his calling to path for a better future
One of the most musically inclined students at Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR) recently completed lead piano on an independent film that will premiere in the New Orleans Film Festival this October, in addition to a list of other noteworthy accomplishments.

4/20/2016 SUBR music students win NANM scholarship auditions
Southern University Baton Rouge music students Joshua Staes and Arthur Gremillion won the Regional (Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas) National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) Scholarship Auditions in voice, held April 8-9, 2016, in Dallas, Texas.

4/26/2016 SULC alumnus Dennis Blunt named chairman of BR Area Foundation
Dennis Blunt, SULC '91, litigation partner at Phelps Dunbar, has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF). Blunt most recently served as vice chairman of the organization.

4/22/2016 SUS Board votes to merge the College of Ag with the Ag Center
The Southern University Board of Supervisors voted to merge the Southern University College of Agriculture with the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center at its April 22, 2016 meeting.

4/18/2016 SUSLA professor elected to AAUP council
SUSLA associate professor of English and Faculty Senate president Sonya Hester was recently elected as a council member at large for the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

4/8/2016 Two BR students participate in 2016 Marshall-Brennan National High School Moot Court Competition
Wilneisha Cavalier, an 11th-grade student at Scotlandville Magnet High School; and Maya Jones, a 10th-grade student at Southern University Laboratory School, participated in the 2016 Marshall-Brennan National High School Moot Court Competition in Washington, D.C., April 8-10, 2016.

8/1/2012 SU System Foundation 1880 Society
Fifteen charter members in the fall of 2011 established a new giving society with the potential to generate $1 million annually for the University. The 1880 Society is a cumulative giving initiative where individuals make multi-year pledges to support the University. The goal is to have 1,000 individuals give at least $1,000 per year.
