7/7/2014 SUNO to Offer ACT Compass Prep Camp, July 7-22
Southern University New Orleans will host an ACT Compass Prep Camp July 7-22, 2014, for prospective college freshmen to receive tutoring in reading, writing, and mathematics. Scheduled 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day, the camp is designed to help students achieve a higher score in English and math on ACT Compass, which can be used for admission and enrollment to four-year colleges and universities.

Southern University New Orleans recently received a $15,000 Community Advocacy grant from the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL).

7/8/2014 Three Southern nursing students win national scholarships
Three Southern University College of Nursing and Allied Health students won scholarships in recent national competitions.

7/2/2014 SUBR professor receives $71,000 for summer research project
Southern University System Distinguished Professor of Physics, Dr. Diola Bagayoko has received a $71,000 federal grant to supplement a two-year-old, successful research project.

The grant, from the United States Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration, is awarded to Southern to engage students in fuel cell and catalysts research.

7/1/2014 Students selected for Honore' Center 2014 cohort
Eight New Orleans-area students have been selected for the third cohort of young men accepted into the Honore' Center for Undergraduate Student Achievement (CUSA) a pilot project for African-American male development established by the Southern University and A&M College System and located on the SUNO campus.

7/1/2014 SU System Foundation launches 'Million Dollar March'
The Southern University System Foundation launched a 90-day viral fundraising campaign "Million Dollar March" July 1, 2014, at Mayberry Dinning Hall Magnolia Room on the Baton Rouge campus of Southern University. Alumni, students, board members, staff, and faculty volunteers were in attendance at the campaign launch.

6/30/2014 SU System Board of Supervisors appoints acting chancellor for BR campus
The Southern University System Board of Supervisors, June 30, 2014, appointed Flandus McClinton Jr., acting chancellor for Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR).
McClinton will lead the main campus of the five-campus SU System until a permanent chancellor is hired to fill the position. He replaces Jim Llorens whose contract ended June 30.

6/30/2014 SU, BRCC agree on student transfer to SU's Computer Science program
Southern University has entered into an agreement with Baton Rouge Community College to facilitate transfer of BRCC students who want to earn a bachelor's degree in computer science after completing their associate degree.

6/26/2014 SU band, dance camp participation hits record high
Southern University's High School Band and Dance Camp has the largest participation - 440 students - in the camp's 17-year history.

The students, who range from middle school to high school seniors, come from all over the country. They hail from as far away as Washington State, Ohio, Maryland, the U.S. Virgin Islands "and everywhere in between," said SU interim director of bands Nathan Haymer.

6/26/2014 SU student ready for national singing competition
Brianna Thompson said she did a happy dance when she found out that she will be representing Southern University at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition in Boston next week.

The junior vocal performance major said she was overwhelmed to be selected but is ready for the competition and the chance to win $1,500. The event will be held July 5-9, 2014.

6/26/2014 SUBR welcomes students for fall classes that begin August 18
Interested students are invited to join the Jaguar Nation August 18, 2014, in Baton Rouge on the beautiful campus of Southern University and A&M College. Great programs from nursing to engineering to business to education to the sciences are waiting. Student enjoy a fun and exciting campus atmosphere that includes social and educational events and a front row seat to the see the world famous Human Jukebox Marching Band.

6/16/2014 SULC chancellor to be inducted into 2014 bar association HOF
Chancellor Freddie Pitcher Jr., of the Southern University Law Center will be inducted into the National Bar Association (NBA) Hall of Fame at a noon luncheon ceremony, Tuesday, July 29, 2014, during the 2014 NBA Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

6/14/2014 SU Ag Center Exposition event stimulates youth in the sciences
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center concluded its 33rd Annual Youth and Family Exposition on Saturday, June 14, 2014, after three days of inspirational learning and fun activities. The event brought more than 300 youth from across the state to engage in contests, hands-on experiential learning, seminars, and friendly interaction on campus.

6/13/2014 SU professor to have book published on earliest English language
David Porter, professor, SUBR, reports that his book on the earliest form of the English language has been accepted for publication by the University of Arizona Press. The book will be published later this year.

6/13/2014 SUNO director receives third patent
William Belisle, director for grants and sponsored programs at Southern University New Orleans, has received his third patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

6/6/2014 SBA president sworn in to serve on the SU Board of Supervisors
The 2014-15 SBA president, Diangleo S. Frazer was sworn in Friday, June 6, 2014, as a student member of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors.

Fifteen charter members in the fall of 2011 established a new giving society with the potential to generate $1 million annually for the University. The 1880 Society is a cumulative giving initiative where individuals make multi-year pledges to support the University. The goal is to have 1,000 individuals give at least $1,000 per year.
