SU Ag Center's CoC Network 'Kick Butts Day' at SUSLA, March 21
- 3/21/2013 -
The 18th Annual Kick Butts Day will be observed by Southern University Ag Center's Communities of Color (CoC) Network, at SUSLA on Thursday, March 21, 2013.
Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to speak up and take action against Big Tobacco at hundreds of events from coast to coast.
The Communities of Color Network and partners will host a health fair/block party in downtown Shreveport on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. on the corner of Texas Street and Louisiana Avenue (next to SUSLA Metro Center). The organizations will provide tobacco prevention information, harmful effects of tobacco, and cessation tips. The event is free and open to the public, particularly youth; there will be free food, drinks, entertainment, and a fun filled tobacco-free environment for the entire family.
According to organizers, throughout the year, young advocates take part in a variety of activities to protect kids from tobacco, including working with elected officials to develop policies that reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke along with educating their peers about tobacco companies' deceptive marketing practices.
According to CoC Network, in Louisiana, 19.4 percent of all high school students currently smoke, and an additional 6700 youth will become new smokers each year. Additionally, the state ranks number 2 as the largest percentage of African-American smokers.
