SUNO to host Poetry Slam competition, April 19 (updated) - 4/19/2013 -

As part of its celebration of National Library Week, Southern University New Orleans Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library will host a Poetry Slam competition on Friday, April 19, 2013. A reception begins at 5 p.m. with competition scheduled for 6 p.m.

The event will allow students, from local high schools and colleges to compete in a friendly environment as individuals or as part of a team. 

This year's theme is "Celebrity."  According to the event planners, contestants are asked to think about what celebrity means, its relevancy in the world today and who/what should we celebrate about others and ourselves. All selections must be the original work of the student(s) and submitted for review to Angelique Carson at Presentations of selection pieces must not exceed two and a half minutes. Pieces must not include vulgarity, profanity, explicit or offensive material. All submissions should be in by Monday, April 15, 2013. Submissions must include the entrant's name, affiliated school, age, contact number, and email address. Selected participants will be notified by April 7, 2013.

First place winner will receive an Apple iPad Mini, second place will receive Beatz by Dr. Dre Solo Headphones, and third place will receive a $50 gift certificate.
