SU, alumnus win HBCU Award - 6/28/2013 -

A Southern University Baton Rouge sports team and a recent graduate each won an award, June 28, 2013, during the 2013 HBCU Media Awards by the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy.

SU assistant to the chancellor Ed Pratt, who attended the ceremony in the Student Center at Jackson State University, accepted the Men's Team of the Year award for the SUBR basketball team, and the Male Student of the Year Award for 18-year-old SU graduate Polite Stewart Jr.

Southern also was nominated for Best Marching Band, Best Nursing Program, Best Student Newspaper, and Male Coach of the Year.

Stewart, who is working as a post-baccalaureate fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, was recently featured on NBC Bay Area's segment "Bay Area Proud" as one of the Bay Area's smartest young person. Click here for story.

The HBCU Media Awards ceremony was presented by Jackson State in partnership with HBCU Digest, an online magazine that focuses on historically black colleges and universities.

More than 600 entries submitted by administrators, students, alumni, faculty, and supporters of HBCUs throughout the country were narrowed to the list of finalists, representing 45 public and private four-year HBCUs from around the nation. Finalists were selected by Center leadership based upon record of achievement and media coverage in local, regional, or national outlets.

In 2012, The Southern University Marching Band and the SU National Alumni Federation each received an HBCU Award at the national awards ceremony held at Bowie State University. The SU Marching Band was named 2012's Best HBCU Marching Band and the Southern University Alumni Federation (SUAF) was named National Alumni Association of the Year.

The HBCU Awards is the first and only event to recognize the influence and impact of HBCUs on American Culture, according to organizers.

The event highlighted the inaugural National HBCU Media Week that featured the annual HBCU Media Summit.
