SU welcomes students from Brazil - 8/14/2013 -

Chancellor James L. Llorens, along with campus student leaders and other SUBR officials, welcomed a group of new SU students from Brazil on August 14, 2013.

The group, a total of 36 students, is part of the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program that provides scholarships to undergraduates for one year of study at a U.S. college or university. Some of the students at Southern are in the English As a Second Language Program and will be on campus for one semester.

Formerly known as the Science Without Borders initiative, the program grants scholarships to students studying in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math commonly known as the STEM fields.
Barbara Carpenter, dean of International Affairs, said the Brazilian students will be separated into two groups: students whose English is good enough to go right into the STEM courses; and students who will need to take a two-month English as a Second Language, or ESL course before they enroll in the normal curriculum.
