9/25/2015 SU System announces new executive VP for academic affairs and provost
The Southern University System (SUS) today selected M. Christopher Brown II as the new executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. Brown has more than 10 years of experience in higher education administration including serving as president of Alcorn State University in Mississippi, and as executive vice president and provost at Fisk University in Tennessee.

9/23/2015 SU System announces search committees for Law Center and Shreveport campus leaders
Two separate search committees comprised of a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and stakeholders will screen applicants and select finalists for two SU System campus chancellors.

6/12/2015 Ray Belton named SU System president and chancellor
After interviewing two finalists recommended by the Southern University System (SUS) President/Chancellor Search Committee, the SUS Board of Supervisors, Friday, June 12, 2015, named Ray L. Belton President and Chancellor of the SU System.

6/1/2015 SU System mourns death of president emeritus Dolores R. Spikes (Updated)
The Southern University System family is deeply saddened by the death of former SU System President Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes who passed away June 1, 2015, at age 78.

5/18/2015 SUS Foundation receives $83k check from ExxonMobil
The Southern University System Foundation, Monday, May 18, 2015, received an $83,625 check from representatives of ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge refinery at a luncheon in honor of the contribution, held in the Magnolia Room on the Baton Rouge campus.

The Southern University System (SUS) Board of Supervisors' President/Chancellor Search Committee today announced applicants for the position of president/chancellor.

4/2/2015 SU alum, businessman Leon Valdry makes $100,000 gift to SUSF
Leon Valdry, a 1957 SU engineering graduate, March 21, 2015, made a unrestricted gift of $100,000 to the Southern University System Foundation's 1880 Society. Last calendar year, Valdry's annual gift totaled $25,000.

3/27/2015 SU alum, Kellogg foundation trustee Joseph Stewart directs $500,000 to SUSF
As a trustee of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, Joe Stewart recently directed a $500,000 contribution to the Southern University System Foundation (SUSF).

In recognition of this gift and his long standing commitment to the University, the SUS Foundation will recognize Stewart for his sizable support toward the advancement of the University's mission on Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Donald Wade House on the Baton Rouge campus of Southern University and A&M College.

1/9/2015 SU Board installs officers for 2015, welcomes new members
The Southern University and A&M College System Board of Supervisors today installed officers for 2015 and held a swearing-in ceremony for new members during its regular monthly meeting.

The Southern University Board of Supervisors today elected Leon R. Tarver II as chairman, and Calvin W. Braxton Sr., as vice chairmen for 2015, during it’s regular meeting held in New Orleans.

11/19/2014BASF donates $25,000 to SU for multi-purpose technology center
A $25,000 donation from BASF will fund a new multi-purpose technology center at Southern University Baton Rouge. The new facility will add advanced capabilities to the University's Career Services Center -- such as virtual interviewing and remote training opportunities -- that will benefit not only students and alumni, but also potential employers.

11/7/2014 BASF awards scholarships to SUBR engineering students
BASF recently awarded $5,000 in scholarships to two engineering majors at Southern University Baton Rouge as part of the BASF’s efforts to support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and careers.

The winning students, sophomore Taquincy Damon Alexander (pictured left) and junior Dorlissia Robinson (pictured right), who each received a $2,500 scholarship from BASF, demonstrated academic success as engineering majors and are active in campus organizations.

The Southern University System mourns the loss of Dr. Akilah Ali, who died Saturday, October 25, 2014, at her home in Baton Rouge. She was 63.

8/26/2014 SUS awarded USDA Grant
The Southern University System recently received a $42,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide technical business training in rural communities throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded $212,500 in grants to support workforce training in Louisiana.

7/11/2014 BR attorney elected SUAF national president
The Southern University Alumni Federation (SUAF) elected Opelousas, Louisiana native Preston J. Castille Jr. national president at its national conference in Houston, Texas, July 11, 2014.

6/30/2014 SU System Board of Supervisors appoints acting chancellor for BR campus
The Southern University System Board of Supervisors, June 30, 2014, appointed Flandus McClinton Jr., acting chancellor for Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR).
McClinton will lead the main campus of the five-campus SU System until a permanent chancellor is hired to fill the position. He replaces Jim Llorens whose contract ended June 30.

1/22/2014 Board of Regents approves SUNO's plan to develop Doctor of Social Work Program
The Louisiana Board of Regents has approved a letter of intent from Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) to establish a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) Program. The degree program would fulfill a need in the profession and the region for an on-site advanced practice doctoral program in social work.

3/19/2015 SUNO Women's Basketball claim first-ever win in three trips to the NAIA National Championship
Seventh-seeded Southern New Orleans, Wednesday, March 18, 2015, became the second team to win its first-ever game at the national championship, as the Lady Knights upset perennial powerhouse and No. 2-seed Vanguard (California), 84-56, in the final day-one game of the 2015 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship, presented by Susan G. Komen Greater Kansas City.

12/19/2014SU System observes Christmas and New Year's holidays
The Southern University System will observe December 22, 2014 - January 2, 2015, as the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. All offices will re-open Monday, January 5, 2015.

12/17/2014SUBR ranked in top 10 2015 Niche Best HBCU Schools ranking, an education ranking website, has selected Southern University and A&M College as the 10th best among Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

12/4/2014 SUNO Child Development and Family Studies Program earns AAFCS accreditation
The Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) has granted accreditation to the Child Development and Family Studies Department at Southern University New Orleans (SUNO). The accreditation is granted until 2024.

9/22/2014 SU observes the passing of former administrator Dr. Elton C. Harrison
Longtime Southern University administrator and ardent University supporter Elton C. Harrison died September 20, 2014. He was 97 and a resident of Baton Rouge.

Harrison served as vice president of Academic Affairs and was a former member of the Southern University Board of Supervisors.

9/3/2014 SU, Genesis Energy create $100,000 scholarship fund
The Southern University System Foundation and the SUBR College of Business and College of Engineering and Computer Science recently partnered with Genesis Energy to create a $100,000 scholarship fund for SU students. The scholarship seeks to encourage students to explore opportunities in their chosen fields of study and to develop a relationship with Genesis Energy. Five students from the Southern University College of Business are among this year's recipients.

8/26/2014 SUBR receives $250K award for global water research with Africa
Southern University Baton Rouge's Patrick Mensah has been honored twice in recent weeks for his efforts in the area of engineering.

Mensah, a professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, is one of 33 scholars who were named fellows and chosen to assist in developing an engineering curriculum at Ashesi University in Ghana, Africa.

8/6/2014 SUSLA awarded $1 million U.S. Dept. of Labor YouthBuild grant
Southern University Shreveport (SUSLA) is among 71 programs across 31 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to receive one of the U.S. Department of Labor’s $73.6 million in YouthBuild grants to support academic and occupational skills training for at-risk youth.

One of three Louisiana awardees, SUSLA will receive $1,075,000. Northshore Technical Community College, based in Bogalusa, will receive $948,905, and St. James Parish Government and Department of Human Resources in Convent will receive $900,000.

7/14/2014 SUBR welcomes students for fall classes that begin August 18
Interested students are invited to join the Jaguar Nation August 18, 2014, in Baton Rouge, on the beautiful campus of Southern University and A&M College. Great programs from nursing to engineering to business to education to the sciences are waiting. Student enjoy a fun and exciting campus atmosphere that includes social and educational events and a front row seat to the see the world famous Human Jukebox Marching Band.

6/2/2014 SUNO celebrates as last FEMA trailer leaves
Torrential rain moved the "Rising in Triumph: Farewell FEMA Trailers" ceremony indoors Monday morning June 2, 2014, but the sun came out just in time for Southern University New Orleans to celebrate as the last Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer rolled off the campus.

5/30/2014 ExxonMobil awards $66,810 to Southern University
Representatives of ExxonMobil's Baton Rouge plant presented Southern University with a $66,810 check as a contribution from employees and the company to the Baton Rouge campus.

5/30/2014 SU director of bands announces his retirement
Lawrence Jackson, director of the world-renowned Southern University "Human Jukebox" Marching Band, is retiring. The Crowley native has been director of bands on the Baton Rouge campus since 2006.

4/2/2014 SUSLA receives $254,635 in grants from La. Board of Regents
Several Southern University Shreveport faculty and staff members have been awarded 2013-14 Louisiana Board of Regents Enhancement for Two-Year Institutions grants totaling $254,635.

1/30/2014 Some SU System campuses, offices open Thursday
Some campuses and offices of the Southern University System (SUS) in areas affected by Winter Storm Leon reopened Thursday, January 30, 2014.

1/13/2014 SU rehab gets $600,000 grant to develop program to assist troubled black students
Southern University Baton Rouge's Department of Rehabilitation and Disability Studies has been awarded a $600,000 grant to study and develop services that help African-American transition-age youth with emotional, intellectual, and behavioral disabilities to succeed in school and in careers.

9/11/2015 SU System overall fall enrollment up, BR campus freshmen class significant, SUSLA breaks record
Targeted recruitment campaigns, an innovative alumni enrollment initiative, and creative recruitment strategies helped boost Fall 2015 enrollment for the Southern University System.

Overall enrollment for the SU System increased by 490 students (12,884), nearly four percent.

10/8/2014 Kellogg grant funds SU System program to disrupt cradle-to-prison pipeline
The Southern University System Foundation recently received a $450,000 grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation for programs that will support the Five-Fifths Agenda for America's (FFAA) national project, the Honore' Center for Undergraduate Student Achievement. (HCUSA).

10/1/2014 SU Foundation 'Million Dollar March' raises $1.1 million
The Southern University System Foundation's "Million Dollar March," fundraising campaign launched July 1, 2014, raised $1,106,333 in cash contributions.
9/25/2014 SU System president on La. Business and Industry Show, Cox 4 Louisiana
Southern University System President Ronald Mason Jr. appeared on the September 25, 2014, Louisiana Business and Industry Show on Cox 4 Louisiana.

3/19/2014 Omega Psi Fraternity Inc. establishes endowed scholarship at SU
Dr. Andrew A. Ray, Grand Basileus, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, March 19, 2014, presented a $25,000 check to SU System President Dr. Ronald Mason Jr. for an endowed scholarship.

The top officer of Omega Psi Phi, Incorporated earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the SU System to establish an Endowed Scholarship Fund in the national fraternity's name at Southern University.

3/27/2015 SUNO professor receives Presidential Award for Excellence
President Obama has named Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) biology professor Murty S. Kambhampati and 13 other individuals and one organization as the newest recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM).

8/3/2015 Bayou Classic signs extension with NBC Sports Group; new kickoff time for annual football contest
The Bayou Classic team announced August 3, 2015, that the 42nd Annual Bayou Classic will once again be broadcast on NBC, but this year will move to the broadcast company’s cable network – NBC Sports Network. Also new for 2015, the kickoff time for the Annual Bayou Classic has been moved from its traditional 1:30 pm CST to a new kickoff time of 4:00 pm CST.

7/21/2015 Southern University System Foundation to launch Million Dollar March, July 23
The Southern University System Foundation will launch a 90-day viral fundraising campaign at noon, Thursday, July 23, 2015, at the Donald C. Wade House located on the Southern University Baton Rouge Campus. Alumni, students, SUS Board Members, staff, and faculty volunteers will be in attendance at the campaign lunch.

3/2/2015 Southern University annual Founders' Day celebration, March 9
Southern University will observe its 135th Founders' Day, with a series of activities March 9, 2015.

The special recognition of the University's history is themed "One Team, One Dream."

10/29/201441st Annual Bayou Classic game and event tickets on sale
Tickets for the 41st Annual Bayou Classic are on sale now. The Bayou Classic, the iconic collegiate gridiron matchup between Southern University and Grambling State University, will take place Saturday, November 29, 2014, in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

9/22/2014 SU Museum of Art features three Louisiana artists in centennial celebration exhibit
The Southern University Museum of Art (SUMA), celebrates Southern University Baton Rouge's Centennial with an exhibit, "Southern Art: Reflections of History, Culture, and Lifestyle," featuring the works of artists Don Cincone, Ted Ellis, and Daryl Tripplett.

The Southern University System will host SU System Day at the Louisiana State Capitol, Monday, April 28, 2014.

3/31/2014 SU gala to raise funding for tuition, scholarships, April 17
Southern University and A&M College is holding its 2014 Centennial Gala at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the L'Auberge Casino and Hotel in Baton Rouge. The event is a fundraiser for scholarships and tuition for deserving SU students.

The cost of the black-tie event is $125 per guest. Featured entertainer is recording artist Regina Belle.
3/13/2014 Symposium to focus on "Quality Education" as a Constitutionally Protected Right, March 26-27
A symposium on "Quality Education as a Constitutional Right and the Role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)" will be hosted by the Southern University and A&M College System (SUS), the Southern University Law Center (SULC), and the SULC Journal of Race, Gender, and Poverty, in partnership with the Mississippi Freedom 50th Anniversary, Wednesday and Thursday, March 26-27, 2014.

3/10/2014 SU Class of '64 grads to celebrate golden anniversary, May 8-9
Graduates of the Southern University Baton Rouge Class of 1964 are planning a golden anniversary celebration May 8-9, 2014.

The commemoration will be in conjunction with the University's Centennial Celebration for the Baton Rouge campus. The University was founded in New Orleans in 1880 and was relocated to Scott’s Bluff in Baton Rouge in 1914.

1/3/2014 SUNO to break ground on Small Business Incubator Center, January 13
Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) will break ground on its Small Business Incubator Center during a ceremony Monday, January 13, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. on the Lake Campus lot next to the current College of Business and Public Administration Building.

5/2/2013 SU Alumni Home Chapter to hold crawfish fundraiser, May 2
The Home Chapter of the Southern University Alumni Federation will host a Crawfish Boil and Music Festival Saturday, May 2, 2015, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at BREC Greenwood Community Park, 13350, Highway 19, Baker. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the event.
