1/22/2014 Board of Regents approves SUNO's plan to develop Doctor of Social Work Program
 
The Louisiana Board of Regents has approved a letter of intent from Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) to establish a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) Program. The degree program would fulfill a need in the profession and the region for an on-site advanced practice doctoral program in social work.

6/30/2014 SU System Board of Supervisors appoints acting chancellor for BR campus
 
The Southern University System Board of Supervisors, June 30, 2014, appointed Flandus McClinton Jr., acting chancellor for Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR).
 
McClinton will lead the main campus of the five-campus SU System until a permanent chancellor is hired to fill the position. He replaces Jim Llorens whose contract ended June 30.

The Southern University System recently received a $42,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide technical business training in rural communities throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded $212,500 in grants to support workforce training in Louisiana.

The Southern University System mourns the loss of Dr. Akilah Ali, who died Saturday, October 25, 2014, at her home in Baton Rouge. She was 63.

11/7/2014 BASF awards scholarships to SUBR engineering students
 
BASF recently awarded $5,000 in scholarships to two engineering majors at Southern University Baton Rouge as part of the BASF’s efforts to support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and careers.

The winning students, sophomore Taquincy Damon Alexander (pictured left) and junior Dorlissia Robinson (pictured right), who each received a $2,500 scholarship from BASF, demonstrated academic success as engineering majors and are active in campus organizations.


11/19/2014BASF donates $25,000 to SU for multi-purpose technology center
 
A $25,000 donation from BASF will fund a new multi-purpose technology center at Southern University Baton Rouge. The new facility will add advanced capabilities to the University's Career Services Center -- such as virtual interviewing and remote training opportunities -- that will benefit not only students and alumni, but also potential employers.

The Southern University Board of Supervisors today elected Leon R. Tarver II as chairman, and Calvin W. Braxton Sr., as vice chairmen for 2015, during it’s regular meeting held in New Orleans.

The Southern University and A&M College System Board of Supervisors today installed officers for 2015 and held a swearing-in ceremony for new members during its regular monthly meeting.

3/27/2015 SU alum, Kellogg foundation trustee Joseph Stewart directs $500,000 to SUSF
 
As a trustee of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, Joe Stewart recently directed a $500,000 contribution to the Southern University System Foundation (SUSF).

In recognition of this gift and his long standing commitment to the University, the SUS Foundation will recognize Stewart for his sizable support toward the advancement of the University's mission on Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Donald Wade House on the Baton Rouge campus of Southern University and A&M College.


4/2/2015 SU alum, businessman Leon Valdry makes $100,000 gift to SUSF
 
Leon Valdry, a 1957 SU engineering graduate, March 21, 2015, made a unrestricted gift of $100,000 to the Southern University System Foundation's 1880 Society. Last calendar year, Valdry's annual gift totaled $25,000.

The Southern University System Foundation, Monday, May 18, 2015, received an $83,625 check from representatives of ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge refinery at a luncheon in honor of the contribution, held in the Magnolia Room on the Baton Rouge campus.

The Southern University System (SUS) today selected M. Christopher Brown II as the new executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. Brown has more than 10 years of experience in higher education administration including serving as president of Alcorn State University in Mississippi, and as executive vice president and provost at Fisk University in Tennessee.

4/19/2016 SU System signs MOU with Cal State to support innovative learning solutions project
 
The Southern University System (SUS), April 19, 2016, signed a partnership Memorandum of Understanding with California State University (CSU) and the Multimedia Education Resources for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) organization for the design and deployment of Southern University's Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) Initiative, and to create the Southern University Open Online Library for Education (SUOL4Ed).

The Southern University System has nominations in nine categories for the 2016 HBCU Awards. HBCU Digest recently announced the finalists in 28 categories for the sixth installment of the national award ceremony that acknowledges and celebrates achievements at historically black colleges and universities throughout the United States.

6/29/2016 SU System announces search committee for SUNO chancellor
 
A search committee comprised of a diverse group of administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and stakeholders will screen and recommend final candidates for the position of chancellor for Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO).

The SUNO Search Committee will assist the Southern University (SU) System with selecting a replacement for Victor Ukpolo who steps down June 30, 2016.

The 17-member search team will be co-chaired by Charles Rice, CEO of Entergy New Orleans, and Gloria B. Moultrie, vice chancellor for community outreach and University advancement, SUNO.

Agreement guarantees admission for two-year college honors students

The Southern University System (SUS and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS), November 30, 2016, announced the LCTCS/SUS Pathway Scholarship, an annual transfer scholarship worth up to $1,500 annually for active Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society student members who wish to transfer to either Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR) or Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) upon completion of an associate's degree at an LCTCS college. Students who meet the LCTCS/SUS Pathway Scholarship Transfer guidelines will be guaranteed admission to SUBR or SUNO after completing an application to the college.

Duncan, who represents SU System students, was sworn in as a member of the Southern University Board of Supervisors during its regular monthly meeting, August 18, 2017, held at the SU Shreveport campus. Also during the August Board meeting, SUSLA math professor Harolyn Wilson was honored with the August 2017 "Above and Beyond” Award.

8/29/2017 Southern University Hurricane Harvey Relief
 
The Jaguar Nation extends prayers and well wishes for SU students, alumni, and all residents affected by Hurricane Harvey that came ashore in Texas last weekend and continues to generate inclement weather conditions for a vast area of citizens.

Donations of non-perishable food items, clothing, personal hygiene products, infant care items (disposable diapers, formula, food), bottled water, and cleaning supplies, may be dropped off at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on the Southern University Campus in Baton Rouge, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Thursday, August 31, Friday, September 1, and Tuesday, September 5.

10/7/2017 SU Hurricane Nate update
 
The Southern University (SU) System and the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness continue to monitor forecasts and weather announcements related to Hurricane Nate. An extended forecast includes possible Louisiana impact.

The SU Baton Rouge (SUBR) Athletic Department announced that kickoff for today's football game against Alabama A&M has been moved up to 1 p.m. at A.W. Mumford Stadium. As a result, the homecoming day party has been postponed.

The annual Homecoming Parade has been rescheduled for Saturday, November 4.
11/24/2017SU Board elects officers for 2018
 
The Southern University Board of Supervisors today re-elected Ann A. Smith as chair, and Donald R. Henry as vice chair for 2018, during its regular meeting held in New Orleans.

Also, during the November Board meeting, Southern University admissions recruiter Robert Rene' and longtime SU supporter Carl Glenn Ellis Gant were honored with "Above and Beyond” Awards.


11/24/2017SU welcomes $1.6 million from private gift, and corporate grant
 
In addition to an anticipated gridiron victory in the 44th Bayou Classic, Southern University wins $1.6 million in support including a $1.1 major gift from alumnus Antonio "Tony” Clayton and a $500,000 grant from Capital One, both presented during the SU System Board of Supervisors meeting today in New Orleans.

1/13/2014 SU rehab gets $600,000 grant to develop program to assist troubled black students
 
Southern University Baton Rouge's Department of Rehabilitation and Disability Studies has been awarded a $600,000 grant to study and develop services that help African-American transition-age youth with emotional, intellectual, and behavioral disabilities to succeed in school and in careers.

4/2/2014 SUSLA receives $254,635 in grants from La. Board of Regents
 
Several Southern University Shreveport faculty and staff members have been awarded 2013-14 Louisiana Board of Regents Enhancement for Two-Year Institutions grants totaling $254,635.

5/30/2014 SU director of bands announces his retirement
 
Lawrence Jackson, director of the world-renowned Southern University "Human Jukebox" Marching Band, is retiring. The Crowley native has been director of bands on the Baton Rouge campus since 2006.

5/30/2014 ExxonMobil awards $66,810 to Southern University
 
Representatives of ExxonMobil's Baton Rouge plant presented Southern University with a $66,810 check as a contribution from employees and the company to the Baton Rouge campus.

6/2/2014 SUNO celebrates as last FEMA trailer leaves
 
Torrential rain moved the "Rising in Triumph: Farewell FEMA Trailers" ceremony indoors Monday morning June 2, 2014, but the sun came out just in time for Southern University New Orleans to celebrate as the last Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer rolled off the campus.

Interested students are invited to join the Jaguar Nation August 18, 2014, in Baton Rouge, on the beautiful campus of Southern University and A&M College. Great programs from nursing to engineering to business to education to the sciences are waiting. Student enjoy a fun and exciting campus atmosphere that includes social and educational events and a front row seat to the see the world famous Human Jukebox Marching Band.

8/6/2014 SUSLA awarded $1 million U.S. Dept. of Labor YouthBuild grant
 
Southern University Shreveport (SUSLA) is among 71 programs across 31 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to receive one of the U.S. Department of Labor’s $73.6 million in YouthBuild grants to support academic and occupational skills training for at-risk youth.

One of three Louisiana awardees, SUSLA will receive $1,075,000. Northshore Technical Community College, based in Bogalusa, will receive $948,905, and St. James Parish Government and Department of Human Resources in Convent will receive $900,000.

8/26/2014 SUBR receives $250K award for global water research with Africa
 
Southern University Baton Rouge's Patrick Mensah has been honored twice in recent weeks for his efforts in the area of engineering.

Mensah, a professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, is one of 33 scholars who were named fellows and chosen to assist in developing an engineering curriculum at Ashesi University in Ghana, Africa.

9/3/2014 SU, Genesis Energy create $100,000 scholarship fund
 
The Southern University System Foundation and the SUBR College of Business and College of Engineering and Computer Science recently partnered with Genesis Energy to create a $100,000 scholarship fund for SU students. The scholarship seeks to encourage students to explore opportunities in their chosen fields of study and to develop a relationship with Genesis Energy. Five students from the Southern University College of Business are among this year's recipients.

9/22/2014 SU observes the passing of former administrator Dr. Elton C. Harrison
 
Longtime Southern University administrator and ardent University supporter Elton C. Harrison died September 20, 2014. He was 97 and a resident of Baton Rouge.

Harrison served as vice president of Academic Affairs and was a former member of the Southern University Board of Supervisors.

12/4/2014 SUNO Child Development and Family Studies Program earns AAFCS accreditation
 
The Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) has granted accreditation to the Child Development and Family Studies Department at Southern University New Orleans (SUNO). The accreditation is granted until 2024.

NICHE.com, an education ranking website, has selected Southern University and A&M College as the 10th best among Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

3/19/2015 SUNO Women's Basketball claim first-ever win in three trips to the NAIA National Championship
 
Seventh-seeded Southern New Orleans, Wednesday, March 18, 2015, became the second team to win its first-ever game at the national championship, as the Lady Knights upset perennial powerhouse and No. 2-seed Vanguard (California), 84-56, in the final day-one game of the 2015 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship, presented by Susan G. Komen Greater Kansas City.

12/2/2015 Florida native named chief student marshal for SUBR fall graduation
 
Florida native, Imani Martina Williams, will lead the 2015 fall graduating class of Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR) next week as chief student marshal.

Williams has a 3.806 GPA, the highest GPA of 498 students who also will receive their diplomas at commencement Friday, December 11, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. in F.G. Clark Activity Center.

8/17/2017 SU Shreveport cuts ribbon on new classroom building
 
Southern University Shreveport, Thursday, August 17, 2017, cut ribbon on the first new classroom building on the main campus since the 1950s. The recently constructed $7.5 million, 36,000-square-foot learning facility is named in honor of the late State Senator Alphonse Jackson, a long-time legislator, community organizer, and Southern University advocate.

The National Science Foundation held a press conference February 11, 2016, to announce the detection of gravitational waves by LIGO. SU alumnus William Parker (pictured, a detection operator, was on duty in the control room at the LIGO Livingston Observatory when the event was detected. Xernona Clayton, a civil rights leader and pioneering broadcasting executive will be the guest speaker for the Southern University Baton Rouge Fall 2016 Commencement Exercises, Friday, December 16, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Leading the 429 fall SUBR candidates for degrees will be top student Laura Syori, who is graduating magna cum laude, with a bachelor of science in engineering from the College of Sciences and Engineering.

Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR), March 9, 2017, will host its 137th Founders' Day with activities commemorating its history, honoring employees celebrating 10, 20, 30, and 40 years of service, and recognizing Southern University alumni who are elected officials throughout the state of Louisiana.

 The public SUBR Founders' Day celebration will begin with a SU Laboratory School Commemoration at 8:30 a.m.

The Community Prayer Brunch/FoundersDay Convocation begins at 10 a.m. in the F. G. Clark Activity Center, a voter registration drive will be held at the Clark Activity Center service entrance during the convocation, and a SU Founders' Day Birthday Party will be held from noon-1 p.m. in Jaguar Square in front of the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.
