8/2/2012 Bayou Classic launches new Web site
 
The Bayou Classic team unveiled a new Web site on August 2, 2012 in anticipation of this year's series of events starting Thursday, November 22, 2012. In addition to the full listing of events for the 2012 Bayou Classic, the new Web site provides fans the ability to connect with their favorite team on personalized pages that put the school’s brands front and center.

The new Web site, accessed at www.mybayouclassic.com, was created to provide an interactive experience for fans of Grambling State University and Southern University.

4/11/2013 Bayou Classic signs extension with NBC Sports Group for next three years
 
The Bayou Classic team announced April 11, 2013, that the 40th Annual Bayou Classic will be broadcast on NBC nationally. The agreement between The Bayou Classic and NBC Sports Group extends the national broadcast on NBC through the 2015 contest.
 
NBC Sports Group has been the home of The Bayou Classic since 1991. Last year, the nationally-televised edition of the 39 th Annual Bayou Classic saw a 19 percent rating increase.

The newly formed 1880 Society of the Southern University System Foundation continues to increase its membership and build a financial support network for the University.

 In the history of Southern University football, only two coaches own the distinction of having defeated Grambling State, Jackson State, and Florida A&M in their first season running the program; Pete Richardson (1993) and the Jaguars' future head coach Dawson Odums (2012).

On Friday, December 14, 2012, Southern athletics director William Broussard recommended Odums, who led Southern to a 4-5 record after being named interim in September, at an afternoon Southern University System Board of Supervisors meeting in the J.S. Clark Administration building on the Baton Rouge campus.

Southern University Shreveport (SUSLA) has passed the GRAD Act for 2012-13 and was officially given a designation of GREEN today by the Board of Regents Executive Committee. The GRAD Act ties performance to 10 percent annual tuition authority as well as 15 percent of a campuses funding formula allocation.

The Southern University Board of Supervisors today elected attorney Bridget A. Dinvaut of Reserve as chairman for 2013 during it's regular meeting held in New Orleans.

Dinvaut, who has been a member of the Board since February, is a graduate of Southern University New Orleans and the Southern University Law Center. The Board Friday also picked Patrick Bell of Thibodaux to serve as vice chair.


5/29/2012 SU and BRAC partner to encourage alumni's return to Baton Rouge area
 
The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) and the Southern University (SU) Alumni Federation today announced that they have agreed to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will facilitate the promotion of BRAC's talent development program among SU alumni. The agreement states that BRAC will partner with the SU Alumni Federation at Federation and chapter events to promote the region and employment activities within it. In turn, BRAC will work to identify career opportunities for out-of-region SU graduates and provide the resumes of alumni members interested in returning to the Baton Rouge area to companies with open positions.  -The MOU's goal is to grow the number of resumes included in BRAC’s talent database.


1/11/2013 SU Board welcomes new members, installs officers for 2013
 
The Southern University and A&M College System Board of Supervisors Friday, January 11, 2013, installed new officers and held a swearing-in ceremony for new and reappointed members during its regular monthly meeting.
 
Incoming chairwoman Bridget A. Dinvaut, who was unanimously elected during the annual officers' election in November 2012, and the Rev. Joe R. Gant of Shreveport, who elected as vice chair at today's meeting, were installed as the 2013 officers for the 16-member governing board for the Southern University System.

James L. Llorens was selected as the next chancellor of the Southern University, Baton Rouge campus, Friday, April 29, 2011.
 
Llorens currently serves as the assistant chief administrative officer for the Office of the Mayor-President, City of Baton Rouge and Parish of East Baton Rouge where is responsible for a $33 million budget and a personal allocation of approximately 500 employees. Llorens previously served as dean of graduate studies, chair of the SUBR Political Science Department, and associate professor of public administration on the Baton Rouge campus.

1/21/2011 SUNO anticipates Spring 2011 enrollment to represent 67% post-Katrina increase
 Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) preliminary figures for Spring 2011 indicate that the University will once again attain the highest enrollment since Katrina. The preliminary enrollment is currently at 3,409 students. The final official numbers will be confirmed on February 4, which is the final day for tuition payments. SUNO's enrollment is 1,372 students over its post-Katrina level of 2,037 in Spring 2006, representing an impressive 67 percent increase since the storm. Prior to Katrina, SUNO had 3,647 students enrolled, and the current preliminary figures would represent a 93 percent recovery of the pre-Katrina levels.

As the budget continues to move through the state's legislature, higher educational institutions are expected to see a reduction of more than $200 million in state support. Particularly hard hit are the schools within the Southern University System, the nation's only system of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The five campuses are faced with a budget reduction of $19 million dollars, with SUNO expecting approximately $2.6 less in funding.

 The official 2011 Spring enrollment for Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO) is 3,318, representing the University's highest enrollment since Hurricane Katrina. This figure also signifies a 91 percent return of SUNO's pre-Katrina enrollment of 3,647 students.

 For the second year in a row, Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO) has been ranked #1 in campus safety with a 98.18 safety rating among Louisiana colleges and universities by StateUniversity.com. The University is ranked #19 in the U.S. by the Web site, up from 20th in 2009. The campus safety report is based on incidents reported by campus safety officials.
5/9/2011 SUNO receives outstanding feedback on SACS accreditation visit
 The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) held its on-site visit of Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO) March 2-4, 2011. The on-site committee report, which the University just received on Thursday, May 5, indicates that SUNO is in compliance with all SACS standards with no recommendations for corrective action.

 Campus to go 100% wi-fi with cloud computing while assigning incoming freshmen laptops
 
Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO) announced that the campus will become 100 percent wireless and will implement cloud computing starting the Summer 2011 session. The University also announced that each incoming freshman who qualifies for the Louisiana Board of Regents regional minimum admission standards and without a personal laptop will have access to a laptop upon arrival. SUNO implemented selective admission criteria mandated by the Board of Regents in Fall 2010.

Southern University, New Orleans will be holding a Restoration Ceremony June 21, 2012 for the Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library that was devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The 10 a.m. ceremony, to be held in front of the library building, will mark the beginning of work to restore the facility and will feature a number of guest speakers including representatives from the student body and the restoration's project manager.

9/11/2012 Preliminary figures show SUNO enrollment up seven percent from previous year
 
Southern University New Orleans continues to climb closer to pre-Katrina enrollment levels as demonstrated by a projected Fall 2012 enrollment of 3,480 students. This number represents a more than seven percent increase over the University's Fall 2011 figures. Included in that number are 274 first-time Freshmen. University officials will not have final enrollment data until after Friday, September 14, 2012, the final day for students to pay their fees. The deadline was extended by a week due to the impact of Hurricane Isaac.

Southern University Marching Band’s drumline will soon be on its way to captivate audiences in the North African countries of Morocco and Algeria.

Fourteen members of the famous "Human Jukebox" band will be performing in theaters, a children's center, sporting events, a morning television show and conducting workshops for young drummers, while touring cities in the two countries.

2/17/2012 SU receives largest legacy gift in University's history
 The Southern University System Foundation has received more than $1 million in a gift from the James and Ruth Smith Trust.

The endowment, the largest bequest in the University's history, includes assets and property from the estate of the late James David Smith and the late Ruth Johnson Smith of Santa Barbara, California, both of whom were Southern University graduates.

It's Super Bowl time again for the world famous Southern University Marching Band.

The band, nicknamed the "Human Jukebox," will perform in New Orleans during pre-game activities of Super Bowl XLVII being held February 3, 2013, in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.This will mark the fourth Super Bowl performance for the SU marching band.

2/7/2013 SU's M-9 advances to second round for Naismith Student Section of the Year
 
With 119,636 votes cast, Southern University's M-9 student cheering section claims 16th place to advance to the second round of voting in the Naismith Student Section of the Year Award. Fans and supporters also helped the popular cheering section place at the top among the SWAC schools participating in the contest.

The M-9 section in the F.G. Clark Activity Center has been nominated as one of the top college basketball student sections in the country and is asking for fans to continue voting to help win the prestigious title.

Southern University, Baton Rouge (SUBR) and Education Online Services Corporation are pleased to announce the launch of a new online degree--the Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA). The online degree is housed within the Department of Public Administration which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. The EMPA is designed specifically for those who already have professional and public sector experience, who are striving for a higher level of education to enable them to access more growth and work opportunities within the public sector.

The Southern University System recently announced the debut of its mobile application suite 'eNtourage' for Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR).

SUBR is leading the technology wave by being one of the first campuses in the U.S. and Canada to provide course add and drop, shopping cart registration and student bill payment directly from students' mobile devices. The new mobile app has a robust suite of applications covering the entire student pipeline management and provides SUBR students and staff with one stop access to the University's information such as campus news, events, maps, and feedback.

Southern University Shreveport, Saturday, May 11, 2013, will hold two commencement ceremonies for Spring 2013 graduates.

The Division of Allied Health and School of Nursing graduation ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and the Divisions of Behavioral Sciences and Education, Business Studies, Humanities and Science, and Technology's will follow at noon. Both ceremonies will be held in the Health and Physical Education Center.

The Division of Allied Health and School of Nursing speaker is SUSLA alumnus Marilyn Glover Latin, RN, BSN, CRT (pictured left). Latin is a registered nurse at the Overton Brooks Memorial Veterans Administration Medical Center in Shreveport. The noon commencement speaker is Ollie Tyler (pictured right), the first woman and first African-American to serve as superintendent of Schools for Caddo Parish and a former administrator with the Louisiana Department of Education.

Southern University Shreveport will host Energy Camp Louisiana June 3-7, 2013, at the main campus. The camp is open to all Caddo parish high school students.

The camp is designed to teach high school students about the different types of energy, energy conservation, and efficiency as well as energy-related careers. During the week-long camp, students participate in hands-on experiments, energy discussions, interactive computer games, and win prizes for "best in class" team efforts.

U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley of the Western District of Louisiana will deliver the 2013 Commencement address for Southern University Law Center at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2013, in the F.G. Clark Activity Center on the Southern University Baton Rouge campus.

Finley is a magna cum laude graduate of Grambling State University and a cum laude graduate of the SU Law Center,.

One hundred and seventy-three graduates are expected to receive the Juris Doctor Degree this spring.

3/1/2011 Visitation for Dr. Emmett W. Bashful to be held Friday at SUNO
 
Visitation for Dr. Emmett W. Bashful, the first chancellor of Southern University, New Orleans (SUNO), will be held on Friday, March 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the University's gymnasium at 6400 Press Drive. Dr. Bashful died Saturday morning, February 27, in Baton Rouge at the age 93. He led SUNO from 1959 to 1987 and had served as chancellor emeritus since his retirement.
