|
Southern University, New Orleans’ (SUNO) enrollment has
exceeded the fall 2008 figure of 3,105 students with 3,163 currently enrolled
for the fall 2009 semester according to preliminary numbers.
The figure also includes an increase in first-time freshmen
at 426 from 353 in fall 2008.
Additionally, there was also an increase in transfer
students from last fall at 286 to 349 this fall.
The numbers represent a significant increase since 2005 when
waters from Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita consumed the Park Campus.
“We are pleased with this post-Katrina trend of enrollment
increases since reopening SUNO in
2006. More students appear to be
making our institution their first choice in terms of where to attend college,
and this bodes well for our immediate and long term future. Our recruiting staff works extremely hard to
contact students and create innovative methods for reaching them,” said Victor
Ukpolo, Ph.D., Chancellor of SUNO.
The figures will not be finalized until the fourteenth day
of class, which will be September 11th according to Ukpolo.
