Southern University Hurricane Harvey Relief - Tuesday, August 29, 2017

A message to the SU Community

The Jaguar Nation extends prayers and well wishes for SU students, alumni, and all residents affected by Hurricane Harvey that came ashore in Texas last weekend and continues to generate inclement weather conditions for a vast area of citizens.

We want to assure parents of students from impacted areas that we are committed to providing a safe environment for all resident students and will offer the appropriate resources and support to assist them as needed until conditions have improved.

A year ago, many in Louisiana, including a large number of SU faculty, staff, students, and alumni, struggled to recover from devastating floods to numerous communities. Thousands sustained heavy damage as a result of the August 2016 flooding. Thanks to tremendous support and efforts from the U.S. government, the state of Louisiana, our alumni, our friends in Texas, and many people from around the country, our communities are on the road to recovery.

In the days and weeks to come, as thousands in Texas and Louisiana begin the process of recovery and rebuilding, Southern University stands ready to do our part in relief efforts.

Donations of non-perishable food items, clothing, personal hygiene products, infant care items (disposable diapers, formula, food), bottled water, and cleaning supplies, may be dropped off at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on the Southern University Campus in Baton Rouge, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Thursday, August 31, Friday, September 1, and Tuesday, September 5.

Donations also will be accepted at the following SU campuses:

SUNO Conference Center, 6400 Press Drive, New Orleans, LA 70126 (corner of Press Drive and Bashful Boulevard)

Southern University at Shreveport

Thursday, August 31 and Friday, September 1, 8 a.m.  - 6 p.m., and Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The University will partner with the Houston Chapter of the SU Alumni Federation to coordinate the delivery of supplies to affected areas early next week.

Additionally, we ask that our alumni, friends, and stakeholders join in to help with this humanitarian relief effort by making contributions to a special 2017 Texas Flood Fund established by the SU System Foundation to accept donations that will go directly to support victims of the devastating flooding in Texas and Southwest Louisiana as a result of Hurricane Harvey. Click here to make a contribution.

Fans and supporters attending the season-opener for Jaguar Football in A.W. Mumford Stadium, Sunday, September 3, will be able to make contributions to the relief fund at the game.

Community service and engagement is central to our mission of providing meaningful public service to the community, the state, the nation, and the world. A team of volunteers including some SU Law Center students and alumni are mobilizing to assist with rescue operations and to help at area shelters and with community cleanup.

We appreciate your support as we provide critical outreach to help those in need.

Thank you,
