SU System congratulates, cheers Coach Sandy Pugh and the women’s basketball team - Friday, March 19, 2010
The Southern University System and the Jaguar Nation congratulate the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Southern University and A&M College women's basketball team and head coach Sandy Pugh on their historic and triumphant season.

After capping off an exciting regular season with the SWAC conference title, the SUBR women's basketball team brought home the 2010 Farmers Insurance Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament trophy and a prized ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Pugh and her gifted and determined troupe, have for the fourth time in the last 10 seasons, put Southern University in the national spotlight during "March Madness."

The Board of Supervisors, administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, fans, friends, and supporters are thrilled to once again cheer on the "Blue and Gold" as they face worthy opponents at the "Big Dance."

The Southern team begins their national tournament hunt on Sunday, March 21 against the No. 1 overall seed, University of Connecticut, in Norfolk, Virginia at 11:16 a.m.

"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and the coaching staff for their awesome victory and achievements. What notoriety they bring Southern University by playing against top-seeded U Conn in the opening round of the NCAA tournament," said SU Interim President Kassie Freeman.

The SU women’s squad heads into Sunday's NCAA first-game match-up with a list of team and individual accomplishments of which the University is most proud. Junior Hannah Kador was named the SWAC tournament's most valuable player while Ashley Augerson was named to the all-tournament team. This year's SWAC tournament championship is the fourth conference tourney title in six tries for Coach Pugh. She has a 17-6 overall record and 4-2 in the tournament championship games. The victory also improves SU's record in the state to 15-1 and 4-0 in the month of March.

"The city, state, and entire Jaguar Nation are rooting for the Jaguars. Good luck to Coach Pugh and the entire team," said Freeman.
