Southern University Alumni Conference underway in Baton Rouge - Friday, July 01, 2011

The 2011 Southern University
National Alumni Conference continues through July 10 in Baton Rouge.
This year's conference, "Bringing it Back to the Bluff," marks the
return of the annual meeting to Baton Rouge, for the first time in 16
years. "I am excited that hundreds of SU
alumni, known as Southernites, are expected to arrive from across the
globe to reconnect, reminisce, and renew the time-honored tradition of a
great university and to recommit to strengthening its future," said
Dennis S. Brown, national president of the Southern University Alumni
Federation. The conference is headquarted at the
Belle of Baton Rouge Hotel in downtown with some events happening on the
SU campus. 'The University community is looking forward to
the conference and the opportunity to have alums returning home. The
planning committee has worked hard to plan a meaningful and enjoyable
experience," added Robyn Merrick, SU System director of Alumni Affairs.
On Friday, July 8 the East Baton Rouge and Home chapters of the SU alumni
host, Red Stick Rocks, a fusion of the generations with live
entertainment by Fuel Ent and DJ Incredible at The Lyceum on 124 Third
Street at 7 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. On Saturday,
July 9, the 8 a.m. Golf Outing: Jags on the Green offers a hometown
outing for golf enthusiasts. The Coaches Corner, at 9 a.m. in the F.G.
Clark Activity Center, is an alumni conference first that gives
participants a chance to hear from all of the Jaguar athletic coaches in
one setting as well as an athletics overview of Southern University at
New Orleans, and a sneak preview of this year’s Bayou Classic and
Atlanta Football Classic followed by a tour of the A.W. Mumford Field
House. The session includes a special video presentation on the life of
A.W. Mumford. The cost for this event is $35 per person. Following
the Coaches Corner session is a campus tailgate at A.W. Mumford Stadium
Parking Lot at noon. RVs, trailers, trucks, and tents for a summer
version of a Jaguar tailgate are welcome. The campus activities continue
with SU Open House from 1-4 p.m. The Summer Soireé Closing
Gala begins at 7 p.m. at the Belle of Baton Rouge Hotel. This
semi-formal gala culminates the conference with dinner and dancing,
awards, recognitions and surprise guests and entertainment. The cost
for this event is $75 per person and $750 for a table of ten. The
conference closes on Sunday, July 10 after worship at the Mount Zion
First Baptist Church on East Boulevard at 11 a.m. followed by brunch at
D'Jon's at 5255 Florida Boulevard. Conference organizers say
