Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair to speak at summer commencement
Adm. Michael Mullen, newly appointed chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, will deliver the keynote address at Southern University’s summer commencement exercises at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 27 at the Felton G. Clark Activity Center. The public is invited to attend.
Mullen is the 28th Chief of Naval Operations and is scheduled to take over as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on September 30.
Prior to Mullen’s current appointment, he served as the 32nd Vice Chief of Naval Operations, commander of three ships: the USS Noxubee; the USS Goldsborough; the USS Yorktown; as well as commander of the Cruiser-Destroyer Group Two, the George Washington Battle Group, the U.S. 2nd Fleet/NATO Striking Fleet Atlantic and the NATO Joint Force Command Naples/Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe.
While ashore, Mullen served in leadership positions at the United States Naval Academy, in the Navy's Bureau of Personnel and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Mullen earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy, a Master of Science degree in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University.
