Southern University, Baton Rouge recognized its most deserving faculty and staff during the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Program, Monday, April 30 in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.
Mildred Smalley, vice chancellor for research and strategic initiative and an employee of 40 years received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is given to an individual who has spent the majority of their life working at Southern University and has made superior achievements and/or contributions to the University and community.
Yadong Qi, Department of Urban Forestry professor, received the Teacher of the Year Award. Mary L. Bradford, head resident, Office of Residential Housing, William Veal, horticultural assistant, landscaping services, facilities services and Mark L. Young Jr., recruiter/coordinator of admissions and recruitment, received Employee of the Year Awards. Rao Uppu, associate professor, environmental toxicology, received the Outstanding Research Investigator Award.
Awards also were presented to the Southern University Millionaire Club, in which recipients received at least $1 million in awarded proposals and the SU Business Industry Cluster presented awards to individuals that displayed quality service on the Baton Rouge campus.
Members of the Millionaire Club are Fulbert Namwamba, associate professor, urban forestry; Alma Thornton, director, Center for Social Research; Robert H. Miller Jr., dean, College of Science; Perpetua Muganda, professor, Department of Biological Sciences; Madan Kundu, professor and chair, rehabilitation and disability studies; and Samuel Ibekwe, professor and chair, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
SU Business and Industry Cluster Quality Award winners were William F. Hanna, secretary, Department of Naval Science; Brenda McNeely, program administrator, Louis Stokes-Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation; Lonnie H. Parker, research farm manager III, Department of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences; Gabrielle S. Stafford, administrative assistant II, Department of Athletics; and Preston H. White, administrative assistant, College of Sciences.
