SULC Celebrates National Library Week
Three men who have made significant contributions to the Law Center were recognized during National Library Week, April 15-21.
The law library is named in honor of the late Professor Oliver B. Spellman. He served as law librarian in fiscal year 1954-55 and earned his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. He became a full-time faculty member in fiscal year 1956-57. After his death in 1965, the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society Student Loan Fund became the Oliver B. Spellman Memorial Student Loan Fund in his honor.
The Law Library hosted a celebration of 22 years of dedicated service for retiring library director Alvin A. Roche Jr. on April 17. April 18 was designated Student Appreciation Day. The Class of 2007 unveiled a historical plaque for the late Charles J. Hatfield, who sued for the desegregation of the LSU School of Law. That lawsuit resulted in the established of a law school for African Americans at Southern in 1947. Hatfield was the first recipient of an honorary law degree from the Law Center in 2002.
Other events held during library week were Legal Research Refreshers, Westlaw Quiz, and Westlaw Certification Training.
