SGA leader gives new meaning to 'giving
back' in donation for books
After being elected Southern University’s
student body president, Carey Ash said he decided
to give back to the students. Ash said the cost of
college textbooks is “extraordinarily high.” He donated
his $4,000 per semester Student Government Association
scholarship to help students buy textbooks.
It took just a few hours for nearly all 40 of the new textbooks his money bought to be checked out Monday from Southern’s John B. Cade Library.
Ash’s “Ivory M. Berry Textbook Assistance
Program” allows needy students at no cost to check
out textbooks — mostly for freshman-level courses
— for a minimum of three weeks. “Like the carpenter
needs the right tools to build a house,” Ash said,
“the tool for learning is a textbook.
