State senators Kenneth Smith, Winnfield and Robert Barham, Oak Ridge, toured the
Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center earlier this summer.
Barham is a member of the agricultural, forestry, aquaculture, and rural development committee chaired by Smith.
The tour began at the M. A. Edmond Livestock Arena in Baker led by chancellor Leodrey Williams then progressed to a tour of the research projects, general arena facilities, research laboratories, and A.O. Williams Hall which is the administrative headquarters of the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
“Southern University Ag Center is doing research on mixed species project to study the effects of grazing cattle and goat together,” said Kirkland Mellad, vice chancellor for research, SUAREC. “This is an opportunity for our legislators to see the type of research that is carried out by our scientists to share the results with our limited resource farmers.”
“We’re thrilled to have an opportunity to share some of what we do here at the Center with our legislators,” said Williams who thanked the delegation for “taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us. It is not often that we have such a great opportunity.”
