SUNO School of Social Work presents family violence prevention conference
The School of Social Work at Southern
University, New Orleans presented a Family Violence
Prevention Services Conference, Thursday, August 30,
at the Sheraton Hotel, 500 Canal Street. Titled "Empowering
African American Women Impacted by Domestic Violence:
From Heartaches to Happiness," this one-day conference
gave participants information on issues related to
the impact of domestic violence on women, youth and
children.
In addition to presentations by Beverly
Favre, dean of SUNO's School of Social Work and other
SUNO professors, moderators included Oliver Williams,
Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American
Community; Mike Groestch, LCSW, Senior Probation Officer;
Victoria Peay, LCSW, Capital Area Family Violence
Intervention Center; Arthemease Melancon, LCSW, Basic
Elderly Crisis Care Intervention; Lucille Perry, Victims
Assistance Coordinator at New Orleans Municipal Court;
Judge Ernestine Gray, Orleans Parish Juvenile Court;
Reverend Torin Sanders, LCSW, Sixth Baptist Church;
Mary Claire Landry, LSCW, Crescent House Battered
Women's Program; and Kristy A. Brumfield, National
Certified Counselor/Intern Coordinator.
Luncheon speaker Leon Chestang, distinguished
professor emeritus, Wayne State University School
of Social Work, addressed the topic "Moving from Fear
to Decisiveness." Participants earned up to six (6)
social work CEUs at this free conference. For more
