Southern University's Baton Rouge campus has been listed among high-ranking schools in producing African-American graduates. Southern's role was underscored in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

Southern System hosting fourth teacher conference

In an act of solidarity, higher education and the elementary and secondary communities will meet for the fourth J.K. Haynes Teacher Preparation Conference September 18 and 19. The event is sponsored by the Southern University System and is a gathering of administrators and faculty from its five campuses and Grambling State University.

Actor Denzel Washington and his wife Pauletta presented two research scholarships in their family's name in ceremony held on the SUSLA campus June 24.


Senate Ag Committee members visit SU Ag Center

State senators Kenneth Smith, Winnfield and Robert Barham, Oak Ridge, toured the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center earlier this summer. Barham is a member of the agricultural, forestry, aquaculture, and rural development committee chaired by Smith.


SUSLA Foundation gives campus $5,000

The Southern University, Shreveport Foundation (SUSF) presented a check in the amount of $5,000 on July 19 to Southern University, Shreveport as a result of the proceeds from the “8th Annual Gentlemen's Cooking Classic.”


SU Ag Center hosts community garden Field Day

In a joint effort with LaVonya Malveaux, director of Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives, Ronald Nicholas and Chris Robichaux, Ag Center extension agents and scientists Owusu Bandele, Mila Berhane and Yemane Ghebreiyessus, SU Ag Center organized a field day in Opelousas in June 30.


Ag Center scientists focus on reducing risk from fruit flies

This summer, Southern University Ag Center urban forestry scientists are collaborating with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in response to exotic fruit fly risks on a bio security project.


SUSLA launches GED and after-school programs

The Youth NetWORK Initiative (YNI) Program in the SUSLA Department of Community Outreach Programs received a $25,000 grant from the Shreveport Bossier Community Foundation to expand its tutoring program to help teens and young adults earn a high school diploma or a GED.

 

Ag Center youth, family exposition promotes education, motivation

Louisiana youth had the time of their life June 15-16 at the Southern University Ag Center as they traveled to Baton Rouge to join others for the Youth and Family Exposition, a two-day educational event. The event was jam-packed with exciting seminars, exhibits, tours, demonstrations, and a presentation by Southern University alumnus Egeenee Daniels, a veterinarian at the University of North Texas and with NASA.

 

College of Engineering featured in U.S. Black Engineer Magazine

The University’s College of Engineering was recently featured in UBSE Magazine. This magazine is published four times a year and is devoted to engineering education for African Americans.

 

Ag Center scientists conduct historic tree preservation and care training

Southern University Ag Center urban forestry scientists conducted a “Historic Tree Preservation and Tree Care Training” for hurricane-affected community members and students on the Baton Rouge campus.

 

SUBR music program receives approval for continued accreditation

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) recently informed SUBR of the Commission's decision to continue the accreditation of the bachelor of music education and the bachelor of music in performance.

 

SACS approves SUBR’s first online academic program

SUBR received notification from SACS recently that its first program to be offered completely online had been approved. The program, a master’s in rehabilitation counseling, is under the direction of Madan Kundu.

 

SUBR hosts business partnering opportunity meeting

On July 25, 2007, SUBR hosted representatives from the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) to further explore the possibility of establishing a partnership with NGRREC which is an entity of Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois.

The partnership between the Law Center and London City University could possibly be extended next year to include a CLE program for law school graduates.

 

SUNO Social Work presents family violence prevention conference

The School of Social Work at Southern University at New Orleans presented a Family Violence Prevention Services Conference, Thursday, August 30, at the Sheraton Hotel, 500 Canal Street. Titled "Empowering African American Women Impacted by Domestic Violence: From Heartaches to Happiness," this one-day conference gave participants information on issues related to the impact of domestic violence on women, youth and children.

 

SUNO staff donates school supplies

The Services for Students with Disabilities staff collected and distributed school supplies to students in the community of Slidell, Louisiana and to students at the Martin Luther King Technology School in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans.

 

Armv ROTC holds summer commissioning ceremony

The Army ROTC Program held its Annual Summer Commissioning Ceremony, July 26. Students, J’Varis Jackson and Stefan Wilson, received their commissions.

 

SUSLA program receives economic development funding

The business incubator at Southern University, Shreveport, is one of several programs that will share more than $600,000 in funding. To help Louisiana small businesses thrive and become more competitive, Louisiana Economic Development (LED) has again allocated $608,000 for the Small and Emerging Business Development program. Across the state, local partners will assist participants, who pay for a portion of the costs themselves, with business planning, accounting, marketing, computer skills and entrepreneurship training, among other activities.

 

Dixon, Ag Center group participate in European study tour

Devona Dixon, SU Ag Center research associate in textile technology recently traveled to London, England and Paris, France for a group European Study Tour. Dixon's group spent 12 days in Europe with five students and three faculty and staff from the Division of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences.

SGA leader gives new meaning to 'giving back' in donation

After being elected Southern University’s student body president, Carey Ash said he decided to give back to the students. Ash said the cost of college textbooks is “extraordinarily high.” He donated his $4,000 per semester Student Government Association scholarship to help students buy textbooks..

Jaguars win nationally-televised season opener against Florida A&M

The third time proved to be the charm as the Southern Jaguars downed the Florida A&M Rattlers 33-27 to claim the 2007 MEAC/SWAC Challenge. The win gives the SWAC its first win in the series and brings the challenge series to 2-1 for the MEAC.

SUSLA training program among funded projects

A Southern University Shreveport program received a needed boost from legislators approving appropriations for transportation, education and social projects. Congressman Jim McCrery announced funding for Southern University at Shreveport's health-care training mission, which will get an infusion of $100,000 tucked into the House's Labor/Health and Human Services appropriations legislation.

April Farmer, a single mother of three who is majoring in criminal justice, was selected by the Executive Leadership Council of Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the United Negro College Fund, to receive a $5,000 scholarship and attend the Black Women's Leadership Summit in New York.

SU to offer film class for adults and youth

Southern University’s Division of Continuing Education will offer a Basic Film Acting Class for those who desire to be in the movies. The classes are part of the division’s Community Outreach Project and are designed to assist the novice with basic information on auditioning.
