Spikes honored at Old State Capitol, nominated for Hall of Fame
Dolores Spikes, Southern University president emeritus, was honored in mid-January at the Old State Capitol. Spikes is a nominee for the Capital Area Leadership Hall of Fame.
She began her career at Southern as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1964 and left after eight years as system president.
Spikes played a major role in settling a long-running lawsuit about the desegregation of Louisiana's public colleges. She also fought efforts to weaken or close historically black colleges.
