SU honors King, Jindal encourages audience to 'reach for visions'

Southern University, Baton Rouge celebrated the life of Martin Luther King Jr. with a candlelight vigil and program on Monday, January 21 and hosted students from LSU and Baton Rouge Community College for a "Unity Celebration" on Tuesday, Janurary 22.

The first event titled, "Keeping the Dream Alive: A Celebration in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." started with commemorative program featuring the Rev. Errol Domingue, pastor, Elm Grove Baptish Church in the Union's Cotillion Ballroom. A candlelight vigil from the Union to Lake Kernan on Roosevelt Steptoe Drive followed.

Louisiana's new governor, Bobby Jindal, joined a host of state and local leaders who paid tribute to King during the program. Jindal characterized King as one of America's great heroes. "He held up a mirror to America and said we can be a great country," Jindal said.

The nation needs to continue to reach for visions that have yet to be attained, he said, later citing the problem of poverty.
