Southern University took a raw young man from Ville Platte and "turned him into who you see standing before you today," Kerney Laday Sr., the head of a business consulting firm, told Southern's Founders' Day audience today in the school's Felton G. Clark Activity Center. .

Center highlights contributions to agriculture by blacks

The Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives in partnership with Agromen Inc., hosted a presentation entitled “The Deep Roots of our Land-Based Heritage” Feb. 25 at the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. Other sponsors were the St. Landry Parish Retired Educators' Association and the St. Landry Parish Southern University Alumni.

In an effort to bring technology and information to underserved communities in Louisiana, the Southern University Ag Center and the Center for Rural and Small Business Development has set up several computer labs like the one located in Disciple Baptist Church in Ville Platte.

Family therapist featured at one of three wellness fairs

Ken Hardy, nationally recognized family therapist appeared at one of the three-campus sites of the first system-wide health fair Wednesday in New Orleans. Hardy was the featured speaker for the Southern University, New Orleans event at on the Lake Campus at 6801 Press Drive. All health fairs, including Shreveport and Baton Rouge, were free and open to the public. .

Honors College freshmen receive laptops through grant

Fifty Honors College freshmen received laptops through the college's "Mobile Computing Initiative," funded by a $1 million HBCU Title III grant. Fifty thousand dollars of the $1 million award was allocated for a pilot program, which provides laptops for Honors College freshmen with a 3.3 or more grade point average, 23/1060 ACT/SAT score, and a demonstrated need.

NBA coach and wife bring major support for SU

Southern University alumni Avery and Cassandra Johnson in January hosted a scholarship endowment benefit at the Petroleum Club in Dallas, Texas. The event, attended by friends, SU alumni, and supporters, raised more than $250,000 for the Johnsons' Southern University endowment.

SU engineering students show moonbuggy skills

Senior design students from Southern University's Mechanical Engineering Department finished in 8th place at the 15th Annual Great Moonbuggy Race hosted by NASA on April 4-5, 2008 in Huntsville, Ala., at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. Twenty-three teams from around the global were represented including students from India, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

SANKOFA, an African-American Museum on wheels, rolled on to the SU campus February 11. The exhibit consisted of art, collectibles and memorabilia relative to the contributions of African Americans to the United States and the world.

ExxonMobil retiree Melvin Sanders and his wife Sylvia Sanders made a recent contribution of 25,000 for scholarships at Southern Unviersity.


Stadium construction project in full swing

Work to expand and upgrade A.W. Mumford Stadium is underway. The 18-month project is part of the $60 million SU System Foundation bond project that when finished will include a north end zone enclosure that will add about $2,500 seats to the stadium and a new football complex.


TI donations supports scholarships, college

A $100,000 donation from Texas Instruments (TI) to the College of Engineering will support scholarships and recruitment efforts for internship opportunities. SU System President Ralph Slaughter thanked the company for the ongoing support of Southern University during a reception in their honor.

The 2007 LSU and SU Agricultural Centers’ Annual Conference took place at Louisiana State University, December 17-18. The event provided opportunities for faculty and professional staff to exchange ideas, meet newcomers, honor colleagues, identify program priorities and enhance working relationships.

The CELP is a pre-collegiate program designed to encourage 8th grade students at Sophie B. Wright to complete high school and attend college. As an incentive, Chancellor Victor Ukpolo announced that "students who comply with various requirements will be awarded a full tuition scholarship to SUNO." .

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) has reaffirmed accreditation of SU’s College of Business for six additional years through 2012-2013.

 

Economic development forum focuses on aiding small businesses

Southern University, Shreveport held its 4th Annual Economic Development Forum Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Shreveport Convention Center. This year's theme, "Southern University at Shreveport: Empowering, Embracing, and Enhancing Small Business Development," focused on small business and non-profit organizational development. The mission of the forum is to network with local and state leaders from business, industry and government to improve the economic welfare of Shreveport and Louisiana through collaborations with higher education.

The Southern' University Police Department employs seven of the 22 students who recently graduated from the Louisiana State Police Basic Academy. SU Police Chief Michael Morris was the keynote speaker for the March 20 graduation ceremony.

The SUNO's indoor track and field season culminated with a successful trip to the NAIA Indoor Championships in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Knights placed 11th out of 44 teams from the United States and Canada.

World's youngest professor aiding in form of rebuilding

The Today Show's Ann Curry conducted an exclusive interview with Alia Sabur who just shy of her 19th birthday was hired to become a professor in Seoul, Korea. Sabur is preparing for her new role while teaching math and physics at Southern University, New Orleans. She said it's her way to aid the area devastated two years ago by Hurrican Katina.

Slaughter: Networking key to business success, growth

SU System President Ralph Slaughter urged members of the Baton Rouge Black Chamber of Commerce to put time and resources into networking as a catalyst for business and professional growth. Slaughter addressed the group Friday, March 7, at Drusilla Seafood in Baton Rouge and outlined recent fund raising efforts with prominent SU alumni like Dallas Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson.

The National Constables Association recently presented its Scholastic Partnership Award to the Southern University, Baton Rouge campus in recognition of its support of the local D.A.R.E. (Drug Assistance Resistance Education) program.

SU engineering alumni receive major citation

Four Southern University engineering alumni were recognized for their achievements in government, industry, and education during the 2008 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) and Career Fair, February 14-17, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Southern Univeristy Timbuktu Academy scholar and physics major Cacey Stevens, recently won the 2008 national competition for the Willie Hobbs Moore Scholarship, a prestigious graduate award of the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP).

Southern announces Fall 2008 football schedule

The Southern University Jaguars will open their 2008 season in Houston in late August when they play the University of Houston squad, according to a release from the sports information office.
