Fifty Honors College freshmen received laptops through the college's "Mobile Computing Initiative," funded by a $1 million HBCU Title III grant. Fifty thousand dollars of the $1 million award was allocated for a pilot program, which provides laptops for Honors College freshmen with a 3.3 or more grade point average, 23/1060 ACT/SAT score, and a demonstrated need.

Each laptop was accompanied by a notebook contract requiring the recipient to maintain the laptop, participate in a teaching-learning workshop, and provide documentation of weekly use. The notebooks must be returned at the end of each semester and will be re-issued when the freshmen return in the fall.
