SANKOFA, an
African-American Museum on wheels, rolled on
to the SU campus February 11. The exhibit consisted
of art, collectibles and memorabilia relative
to the contributions of African Americans to
the United States and the world. SANKOFA, a
Ghanaian term that means the “use of wisdom
of the past to build the future,” was the brainchild
of curator Angela Jennings. In addition to her
art collection, Jennings also presents stories
and dramatizations about selected historical
figures and periods. The exhibit encompasses
the period from 1860 to the present. Jennings
created SANKOFA in 1995 as a way to teach her
nephew about the history of African Americans.
She has traveled throughout the United States,
the U.S. Virgin Islands, West Africa, and Europe
to finds pieces for her exhibit.. |
