After-school and summer program focuses on preventing teen pregnancy

Southern University's Department of Sociology is hosting an after-school and summer youth program entitled Empowering Youth Choices: Southern University's Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program.

The TPP program, which will run until February 2009, will focus on preventing teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, reducing the numbers of teens having sex by encouraging abstinence; enhancing academic skills; solidifying personal, cognitive, interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills; enhancing self-esteem; and providing recreational activities.

Enrollment is free and open to all middle and high school students age 11-18 living in North Baton Rouge. The program will be held in the Rodney G. Higgins Hall from 2:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Monday - Friday during the school years and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Friday during the months of June and July. Students are currently being accepted.

The program is funded by a grant from the Louisiana Department of Social Services Office of Family Support.
