The Southern University Lady Jaguar Bowling Team reached mid-November undefeated in division play and sitting on top of the SWAC's West Division. The Lady Jaguars are no strangers to high-level competition after four national SWAC titles and are off to a 9-3 overall start to the 2007-2008 season.
The bowlers hit the road hard in the month of November with tournaments in Houston, Fort Atkinson, Wis., and Chicago. They will travel to Jackson, Miss., and Elmwood Park, N.J., before the end of December.
The lady bowling team has a starred and rich tradition at Southern University. In the last decade, they have won four SWAC conference titles and finished second four years.
At the heart of the tradition is head coach Karen Couvillon. She has coached at Southern for 10 years and is credited with building the strong program. Couvillon's bowlers were invited to be one of eight teams invited to the first NCAA National Bowling Championship in 2004 and finished that year ranked 5th in the nation. Couvillon has received four SWAC Coach of the Year honors.
In 2007-2008 tournament play, the Lady Jaguar bowlers are closely trailing current No. 1 Alabama A & M and No. 2 Jackson State. The team will continue conference play through the February SWAC Classic and is expected to be contenders in the National Championship in April.
