SUNO Chancellor starts Emerging Leadership Program

Veteran news anchor and author Sally Ann Roberts was the keynote speaker for the kick-off event of the SUNO Chancellor's Emerging Leadership Program (CELP) November 14 at Sophie B. Wright Charter School.

Roberts has been in television for more than 20 years at WWL TV, New Orleans' CBS affiliate. She is the founder of the Each One, Save One non-profit mentoring program and also the author of the book "Going Live: An Anchorwoman Reports Good News". Roberts' sister is Robin Roberts of ABC's "Good Morning America".

The CELP is a pre-collegiate program designed to encourage 8th grade students at Sophie B. Wright to complete high school and attend college. As an incentive, Chancellor Victor Ukpolo announced that "students who comply with various requirements will be awarded a full tuition scholarship to SUNO." Pending approval of the Board of Supervisors of the Southern University System at its November 23, 2007 meeting, 35 students will comprise the inaugural CELP class.

There are several components of the CELP:

  • Students must agree to participate in the program throughout their high school years, regardless of the senior high school they attend.

  • Students must pursue the TOPS curriculum and meet all of its requirements.

  • Students' progress will be monitored by CELP administration and staff.

  • Students must participate in SUNO's Dual Enrollment Program starting in their junior year of high school.

  • Students will participate in a mentoring program with administration, faculty, staff and alumni of SUNO.

  • Students will be encouraged to participate in activities sponsored by SUNO throughout their high school years.

The CELP scholarship is renewable on a yearly basis based on satisfactory performance consistent with TOPS program requirements.

Sophie B. Wright Charter School has been managed by Southern University, New Orleans since June of 2005. Since the school has been chartered, Wright has improved its 8th grade LEAP scores and has also won the praise of BESE Board Member-at-Large/Vice President Leslie Jacobs.
