Gen. Honoré among four Thurgood Marshall College Fund honorees

Lt. Gen. Russell Honoré received the Alumni Leadership Award during the 20th Anniversary Awards Gala for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Lt. Gen. Russell Honoré was recognized for his leadership in Joint Task Force - Katrina when the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) honored leaders recently from the public and private sectors.

A graduate of Southern University, Honoré received the Alumni Leadership Award which is presented to an HBCU alumnus, of TMCF's 47 member schools, whose accomplishments serve as a model for all HBCU alumni. Honoré is one of nine Southern alumni promoted to the rank of general in the U.S. military.

The 20th Anniversary Awards Gala was held November 5, 2007 at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers and System President Ralph Slaughter introduced Honoré. "Each of these honorees embodies the legacy of Justice Marshall through their passion for public service and education. Their collective investment in our mission has strengthened the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and our commitment to helping prepare a new generation of leaders," said Dwayne Ashley, President and CEO, Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

20th Anniversary Award Recipients:

  • Corporate Leadership Award, Tom Long - President and Chief Executive Officer, Miller Brewing Company;

  • Education Leadership Award, N. Joyce Payne - Founder, Thurgood Marshall College Fund;

  • Community Service Award, E. Marianne Gabel - Philanthropist, Attorney and Community Leader

  • Alumni Leadership Award, Lt. Gen. Russell L. Honoré - United States Army

    This year's theme, "Dreams Delivered," highlighted the organization's 20 years of success in providing more than $68 million in scholarships and programs that have enabled over 6,000 students to graduate from college.
