Jaguars take victory, but share positive effects of Classic

The 34th Annual State Farm Bayou Classic ended with the Southern University Jaguars holding a crystal trophy and the ticket to a year of bragging rights, but the event reflects a "win-win situation" for state and local economy, the City of New Orleans and both legendary HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) schools.

Southern players score Classic win in defeat of Tigers

The Senior co-captains Jarmaul George and Gerard Landry led Southern onto the field with two huge school flags. They could have passed the flag around for the next 60 minutes, because the Jaguars strung together a host of efforts in all phases to beat 16th-ranked Grambling, 22-13, in Bayou Classic XXXIV on Saturday in the Superdome.

NBC presents 'Every Man a Tiger: The Eddie Robinson Story'

NBC Sports presented "Every Man a Tiger: The Eddie Robinson Story," a 30-minute special, presented commercial free by State Farm, that looks at the legendary Grambling State University football coach who sent more than 200 players to the NFL, retired as the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division 1 history and, for 57 seasons, led and motivated his players to successful lives both on and off the field.

SU first HBCU to visit Bering Glacier research site

The Bureau of Land Management invited a team of SU researchers to examine the rapid melting and calving of the Bering Glacier in coast south central Alaska. The Bering is the largest (5200 sq km) and longest (190km) glacier in North America and contains approximately 20 percent of Alaska's total glacier ice.

The 15th Annual SU Thanksgiving Food Drive concluded with the distribution of food the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in the Stewart Hall Auditorium.

Small farmer training program meets at Ag Center

The 1890 System developed the Small Farmer Agricultural Leadership Training Institute to address the needs of small-scale minority farmers. This two-year course of study guides small, limited-resource and minority farmers through the process of becoming more competitive agricultural entrepreneurs.


Lady bowlers ready to strike it rich again

The Southern University Lady Jaguar Bowling Team reached mid-November undefeated in division play and sitting on top of the SWAC's West Division. The Lady Jaguars are no strangers to high-level competition after four national SWAC titles and are off to a 9-3 overall start to the 2007-2008 season.

SUNO to continue home games at Delgado until Castle is rebuilt

The SUNO Knights and Lady Knights have started the basketball season, but still look forward to returning to "The Castle" on the Southern University, New Orleans South Campus. As the facility nears completion, the historic Pontchartrain Park HBCU will play its home games at Delgado Community College's Michael L. Williamson Complex until The Castle is ready. The Castle was one of 11 buildings destroyed by flood waters from both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

 

SUNO Chancellor starts Emerging Leadership Program

The CELP is a pre-collegiate program designed to encourage 8th grade students at Sophie B. Wright to complete high school and attend college. As an incentive, Chancellor Victor Ukpolo announced that "students who comply with various requirements will be awarded a full tuition scholarship to SUNO." .

Jaguar football enjoys ranking, early winning streak

The Jaguars were ranked 25th until a heart-breaking loss to Alabama A & M in early October. The last time they played a game as a ranked team was when they were 20th in December 2004 before falling to Alabama State in the SWAC Championship Game.

A trio of Southern University students helped restore Ashlee L. Menke’s faith following their acts of kindness amid a near life-threatening accident. She was aided when students, who were en route to school following a church service, stopped to help push her car onto the Mohican and Wyandotte exit ramp off the interstate.

Students join forces with NASA to help protect Gulf Coast forests

A team from Southern University, Baton Rouge joined group of Louisiana and Mississippi students who spent their summer break giving back to their communities. Using NASA satellite data, they hope to come up with a better way to detect and map the hurricane-induced vulnerabilities of Mississippi's forests.

Southern soccer stand-outs kicking to next level

The Southern University ladies soccer team finished the year with five members on the All-SWAC team including a standout freshman from Fairfield, Calif., who led the nation in saves per game. SU goalie Divinity Bradley led the SWAC with 159 saves and was named Freshman of the Year.

Urban Sports News names Manns College SID of Year

John Posey, publisher and CEO of Urban Sports News (USN), announced the selection of Southern University, Baton Rouge Sports Information Director Kevin Manns, as its first College Sports Information Director of the Year. Manns was selected from 36 SID's in the SWAC, MEAC, PAC 10, SIAC, Sunbelt and Conference USA. Manns will receive the award during the Bayou Classic activities.

SUSLA Surgical Technology Program noted for excellence The Southern University, Shreveport Surgical Technology Program has received a certificate of achievement for the second consecutive year marking the program and its students' excellent performance on the Program Assessment Exam (PAE), a mandatory qualitative assessment tool, used for program accreditation.

 


SUNO to celebrate Kwanzaa with inaugural Ma'afa Awareness Week

Southern University, New Orleans' Center for African and African American Studies will hold its inaugural Ma'afa Awareness Week November 26-29. The week will culminate in the annual Kwanzaa Festival on Thursday, November 29, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the North Campus at 6801 Press Drive. All events are free and open to the public.

Small business center at SUNO to hold training course for entrepreneurs The Small Business Development and Management Institute at Southern University, New Orleans will hold a course for future business owners. The "NxLeveL Entrepreneurial Training Classes" will start with a registration and orientation on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 6 p.m. The registration and orientation will be held in Building 43 of the North Campus.
