SUNO AND N.O. museum present exhibit
The Center for African and African
American Studies and the Master of Arts Program in
Museum Studies at Southern University at New Orleans
(SUNO) and the New Orleans African American Museum
of Art, Culture and History (NOAAM) present an International
Muslim Artists Exhibition, continuing until November
11, 2007. It takes place at NOAAM, 1418 Gov. Nicholls
Street. The opening reception was Saturday, October
13.
Haitham Eid curates the exhibition which features diverse works by contemporary Muslim artists. Fifty paintings from more than a dozen artists from five different countries, covering four continents, will be on display. While some of these artists are still preserving beautiful
traditional Islamic art styles such as calligraphy, geometric shapes and decorative leaves, others have embraced modern art school techniques in order to more effectively express their feelings and ideas. Additionally, some of the Muslim artists attempt to find common ground between the two groups, using the traditional Islamic elements in a modern art style to create unique, contemporary Islamic art.
NOAAM's hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission for adults is $5.00; groups and seniors, $3.00; and students, $3.00.
