SUSLA breaks ground on student apartments
Although postponed by rainfall, Southern University, Shreveport received encouraging support by the local media highlighting the construction start for student apartments on the MLK campus. The ceremony took place on the nine-acre site of the new building located behind the University Library.
The groundbreaking represents the University’s largest campus enhancement project in several years to accommodate a growing student population, support housing for athletic programs and to spur economic development in the MLK community.
Students will have the option of leasing a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment for about $580 per student a month or a four-bedroom, two bathroom apartment for about $480 per student a month.
SUSLA Chancellor Ray Belton said he hopes the apartments will help spur more economic opportunities in the north Shreveport area as well as serve the needs of students.
“We are inundated with inquiries from students in south Arkansas and east
Texas asking if we have student housing available,” he said. “I think the community is excited about the apartments and this will transform student life on campus.”
