Assistant Professor-Educational Leadership

Southern University invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Educational Leadership, supporting its fully online program. This program is designed to prepare transformative, equity-driven, and data-informed leaders in education. The successful candidate will have expertise in educational leadership, online pedagogy, and accreditation processes (CAEP), as well as experience in student advisement, SLLA preparation, and leadership fieldwork. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate alignment with the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL) to ensure that graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundations necessary for effective school leadership.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching & Curriculum Development (Aligned with PSEL Standard 4: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment)

  • Deliver high-quality online instruction in graduate courses in educational leadership.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain course materials to align with state licensure requirements, accreditation standards (CAEP), and PSEL competencies.
  • Incorporate technology-driven, data-informed, and culturally responsive pedagogical strategies.
  • Prepare students for the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) through targeted instruction and mentorship.

Research & Scholarship (Aligned with PSEL Standard 10: School Improvement)

  • Establish and maintain a robust research agenda in educational leadership, school improvement, or related fields.
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, national conferences, and professional organizations.
  • Pursue external funding opportunities to support research and program initiatives.
  • Engage in data analysis and continuous program improvement, utilizing educational leadership field trends.

Service & Program Development (Aligned with PSEL Standard 9: Operations and Management)

  • Contribute to departmental, college, and university committees to support institutional governance.
  • Assist with CAEP accreditation preparation, program assessment, and curriculum alignment.
  • Engage with local, state, and national educational organizations to build partnerships and enhance program visibility.
  • Provide leadership in recruitment and retention strategies to strengthen student enrollment and success.

Student Advisement & Field Experience (Aligned with PSEL Standard 5: Community of Care and Support for Students)

  • Provide academic and professional advising to students in the online program, guiding them through coursework, field experiences, and research projects.
  • Support student success and retention by implementing data-informed strategies.
  • Mentor students in action research, dissertations, and applied leadership experiences.
  • Assist students in securing field experiences in collaboration with K-12 school leaders.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Aligned with PSEL Standard 3: Equity and Cultural Responsiveness)

  • Foster an inclusive learning environment that supports diverse student backgrounds and experiences.
  • Incorporate culturally responsive leadership strategies into teaching, research, and service.
  • Engage in community partnerships that promote equity and social justice in education.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Earned doctorate in Educational Leadership, Educational Administration, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in online teaching, including proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas).
  • Evidence of a developing or established research agenda in educational leadership or a related area.
  • Familiarity with CAEP accreditation standards and experience with program assessment and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of SLLA licensure exam preparation and experience in supporting student success on certification assessments.
  • Commitment to PSEL-aligned leadership practices, student-centered advisement, and data-driven decision-making.

Preferred:

  • Experience in online education program development and instructional design.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations in educational leadership or related fields.
  • Experience in securing external funding for research or program initiatives.
  • Practical leadership experience in K-12 education (e.g., school or district leadership roles).

Appointment Terms:

This is a full-time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Opportunities for summer teaching may be available.
