Job Description of UBMS Project Director
The Director serves as the lead administrator for the daily operations of TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science Project Columbia. This role requires a commitment to fostering high academic standards, creating a supportive and engaging learning environment, and promoting trust, collaboration, and positivity among students and staff.
The director is responsible for ensuring full implementation of each project’s approved proposal and must remain highly visible and accessible to participants, staff, and families. The ideal candidate is comfortable guiding a shared academic decision-making model, demonstrates a strong educational vision through effective action, and maintains efficient, cost-conscious program management. Successful applicants will excel in a collaborative leadership environment and contribute meaningfully to the overall mission of TRIO.
Duties of UBMS Project Director
- Program Leadership & Compliance: Lead strategic planning to ensure all TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science objectives are met while maintaining full compliance with federal regulations, sponsor requirements, institutional policies, and youth protection standards.
- Grant & Fiscal Management: Develop and monitor the program budget, approve expenditures, and collaborate with Sponsored Programs and Grants Accounting on financial reporting, drawdowns, and reconciliations.
- Program Design & Service Delivery: Design, implement, and assess year-round academic services—including tutoring, Saturday academies, advising, test preparation, and STEM enrichment—and direct the multi-week summer component.
- Student Recruitment & Case Management: Recruit and select eligible participants, verify required documentation, develop Individual Success Plans, and monitor academic progress, performance, and overall student success.
- Staff Supervision & Development: Hire, train, and supervise professional and seasonal staff, providing ongoing coaching, evaluations, and professional development to ensure high-quality program delivery.
Education Required:
- Master's degree required; doctoral degree preferred in education, counseling, social work, higher education administration, or an appropriate STEM field related to project objectives.
Work Experience Required:
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in budget management, program development and evaluation, reporting, compliance with federal regulations, and staff supervision.
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience with federal TRIO programs, academic instruction, tutoring programs, or similar STEM programs for disadvantaged low-income 9th-12th-grade students who are potential first-generation college students.
- Experience designing, managing, or implementing similar projects serving low-income and potential first-generation college students.
- Experience providing academic advising, non-cognitive skills, college, STEM careers, and financial literacy to secondary schools. Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting UBMS-eligible students.
