Omega Psi Fraternity Inc. establishes endowed scholarship at SU

The top officer of Omega Psi Phi, Incorporated earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the SU System to establish an Endowed Scholarship Fund in the national fraternity's name at Southern University.

"We are very pleased to partner with Omega Psi Phi to establish a scholarship fund to provide support to young men working to better themselves, their communities, and the world. This generous commitment is a great investment in the future of aspiring SU students. It's a beautiful thing," said Mason.

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated Endowed Scholarship at Southern University will fund scholarships for the academic support and achievement of full time students in good standing at the University who are also members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, and who meet the scholarship's requirements.

Ray, who received a bachelor's degree in economics from Southern University and was a member of the campus' Beta Sigma chapter, said, "Omega Psi Phi is re-emphasizing our principle of investing in young people through scholarships. This scholarship fund will support young men at SU and support the uplift of humanity."

"We should never forget the bridge that brings you over, and with this scholarship fund, we want to make sure to build a permanent bridge for others to overcome. We are hoping that this endowment will generate the commitment and passion of alumni and others from all over the country to think about giving, and write a check to Southern University."

Also, Ray presented a personal check for $100 in honor of the University’s "$100 for 100 Years" Centennial Scholarship Fund.

Founded in 1911, Omega Psi Phi is an international fraternity with over 700 undergraduate and graduate chapters. The fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911. Its purpose has been to attract and build a strong and effective force of men dedicated to its cardinal principles of manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift. Throughout the world, many notable members are recognized as leaders in the arts, academics, athletics, entertainment, business, civil rights, education, government, and science fields. Omega Psi Phi celebrated its centennial during the week of July 27-31, 2011 in Washington D.C., becoming distinguished as only the third African-American collegiate fraternity to reach the century mark.
