SUNO's annual health and wellness fair moves to new semester, location

The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Family Wellness Fair will be on Wednesday, September 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Health & Physical Education Building at 6400 Press Drive. The event is free and open to the public with free screenings for cholesterol, diabetes, stress, HIV/AIDS, blood pressure, depression and anxiety. There will also be guest speakers along with free food and entertainment.

"We want to provide medical and psychological wellness tips and information to our SUNO family as well as the general community," says Corrine Shelton, the coordinator of the fair and SUNO's mental health counselor. Shelton says that the African-American community should be particularly concerned about diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and stress.

Past SUNO Family Wellness Fairs have served as many as 500 to 600 people, according to Shelton. "We're also excited to have the fair in the gym, where it's cooler," she says.

The fair, which started as an annual spring event in 2007, had traditionally been held on the Lake Campus, under a tent where many University events had been held, post-Katrina.

The event is sponsored by the University's Lyceum Committee. For more information call (504) 286-5363 or 5374.
