Job Description:

Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical College is a comprehensive institution and America's oldest and only historically Black University System of schools offering academic programs at Baton Rouge, Shreveport, and New Orleans.  The Department of E-Learning (SU Online) seeks an Admission Counselor who works to establish a framework for meeting institutional recruitment, retention, and graduation goals for online degree programs at Southern University.

 The Admission Counselor reports to the Director of SU Online and serves as a member of the SU E-Learning team and is a key representative to constituencies throughout the state and nation.

They are responsible for participating in the recruitment of incoming freshmen and transfer students and assists in the organization and coordination of special programs as needed.

 Responsibilities

  • Establish, implement, and carry out recruitment strategies for SU Online degree programs
  • Attends college fairs, community college programs, veterans' educational events and other related activities to promote the growth of online degree programs and certificate offerings through the university.
  • Inputs application and transcript information into Banner, working with enrollment management to process student materials in a timely and organized
  • Develops working relationships with university agencies, departments, counselors, and advisors to enhance customer service and satisfaction.
  • Coordinates with high school counselors, community college and four-year institution partners to facilitate the application process
  • Responsible for counseling & outreach for students and
  • Travels to high schools, colleges, and other learning institutions to publicize and explain admission requirements and financial aid information; organize and coordinate special programs relevant to the recruitment of students
  • Responds to web inquiries re: SU Online programs, providing timely and accurate customer service
  • Manage and track applications, informing both students, counselors and SU Online team of application status; review applicant credentials for admission and scholarships in compliance with University and department standards to assist with developing an admission
  • Works directly with applicants and their parents to resolve extenuating circumstances, complaints and appeals of admissions
  • Assist with special retention programs
  • Contribute to the development of team goals and strategies, while setting individual goals; make recommendations to the Director regarding current trends within the online education market.

Minimal Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have a bachelor's degree, and one year of relevant admissions experience or equivalent student services and/or higher education experience.

Candidate should also possess a strong commitment to the university's recruitment, retention and graduation goals and mission. Knowledge of higher education administration practices is desired.

The candidate must possess a valid driver's license. In addition, the candidate must:

  1. A collegial, friendly, flexible, and collaborative approach to student recruitment, leadership, and service.
  2. Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks with a strong attention to detail.
  1. Ability to follow through consistently on inquiries, requests, and
  2. Experience resolving problems and to develop relevant alternatives and
  3. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to establish positive public relations for Southern University and interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
  1. Demonstrated ability to use tact, diplomacy, and discretion in all matters,
  2. Strong knowledge of computer software programs such as Banner, Moodle, Canvas, Microsoft Office Products: Word, Excel, Outlook, and customer relations management (CRM)
  3. Valid Louisiana Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment
