Interventionist Counselor

Overview:

  • The SUPD is seeking to start a Co-Responder Role within the Southern University Police Department. This process is to give support to individuals in the campus community when the counseling center is closed and also aimed at reducing the arrest of individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, and linking them with treatment and services. The program pairs a mental health clinician with officers to respond together in situation of mental health crisis. The clinician performs brief assessments consulting with the officers to determine appropriate dispositions for services, diversion from arrests, diversion from unnecessary emergency room visits, or involvement. The clinician also facilitates training for police officers to increase competencies in intervening with mental health crisis. The clinician will work in conjunction with and collaboratively with the University Counseling Center.

 

Job Description: 

  • Provide rapid crisis intervention and assessment to individuals who have come to the attention of the police, on as-needed basis.
  • Provide face to face or telephonic follow-up with persons served when clinically indicated.
  • Accompany police officers on patrol as allowed by officer in charge.
  • Work in collaboration with police to ensure that persons with mental health and/or substance misuse and abuse needs are appropriately diverted from the criminal justice system and referred for appropriate mental health services.
  • Work in collaboration with University Counseling Center and other programs to ensure individuals are linked to proper services.
  • Provide and/or coordinate, as needed training to police personnel.
  • Compile and submit monthly statistics.
  • Establish and maintain regularly scheduled Community Police Collaborative meetings of all Stakeholders and community providers.
  • Perform needed case management duties aimed at reducing future encounters with Law Enforcement.

 

Work Hours:

  • 40 Hours Full Time
  • Night shift dependent on Law Enforcement Agency needs

 

Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Clinical Social Work
  • Licensed or eligible within one-year of employment
  • Experience working with a collegiate population preferred, crisis experience recommended
  • Total work experience of five years
