Coordinator of First and Second Year Experience

Duties/Responsibilities:

 

The Coordinator of 1st and 2nd Year Experience at Southern University supports the retention, academic success, and overall student experience of first- and second-year students. This position is responsible for assisting in the development, coordination, and execution of programs (Jaguar Success Academy) and services designed to ease the transition into university life, foster student engagement, and promote persistence through the second year.

 

The Coordinator works closely with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that first- and second-year students receive the academic, social, and personal support they need to succeed. This role includes managing events, providing resources, and tracking student progress to ensure a positive and enriching experience for all students.

 

Job Description:

  • Assist in planning and implementing programs (Jaguar Success Academy) and initiatives that promote first- and second-year student engagement, retention, and success.
  • Coordinate orientation activities, first-year seminars, and keys to success workshops that address the academic, social, and developmental needs of first- and second-year students.
  • Organize welcome week activities, peer mentoring programs, and learning communities that create a supportive environment for new students.
  • Serve as a point of contact for first- and second- year students, offering guidance on academic and personal challenges, and referring them to campus resources as needed.
  • Help facilitate programs and events that foster a sense of belonging and build community among first- and second- year students.
  • Work closely with academic advisors, residential life staff, and other campus partners to support student success initiatives and address my challenges students may face.
  • Track and monitor the participation, engagement, and success of first- and second- year students in various programs and initiatives.
  • Assist in gathering and analyzing data related to student retention, academic performance, and program outcomes to support the development of student success strategies.
  • Provide regular reports to the Director of 1st and 2nd Year Experience regarding the progress of key initiatives and any emerging trends in student success.
  • Coordinate and execute events, workshops, and programs aimed at supporting first- and second- year students in their academic and personal growth.
  • Ensure smooth logistics and operations for all events, including space reservations, event promotion, and collaboration with campus partners.
  • Develop communication materials, including flyers, newsletters, and social media posts, to inform students about upcoming events and programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and student organizations to ensure that first- and second- year students are connected to resources that support their academic and social success.
  • Work closely with other departments, such as Academic Advising, Career Services, and Counseling Services, to provide comprehensive support for students.
  • Establish strong relationships with student leaders and organizations to promote leadership development opportunities for first- and second- year students.
  • Regularly communicate with students to ensure they are aware of campus resources, events, and opportunities for involvement.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining a communication plan to keep first- and second- year students informed and engaged.
  • Maintain a strong social media presence and update digital platforms to ensure students are connected to relevant information.
  • Assist in other initiatives within University College as needed.
  • Participate in university committees related to first- and second- year student success and retention.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in student affairs, academic advising, or program coordination in a higher education setting.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience with first- year experience programs or student retention initiatives.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with best practices in student development and engagement.
