Chief Internal Auditor

JOB SUMMARY:

 The Chief Internal Auditor is responsible for the performance and supervision of activities involved in the internal audit function for the five campuses of the Southern University System.  Internal Audit’s mission is to provide independent objective assurance and consulting services designed to add value and improve the Southern University System operations and assist management in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systemic disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes. 

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Design, manage and evaluate the internal audit process to ensure compliance with applicable laws, university policies, and auditing standards.
  • Initiate special audits and perform studies to assist management in solving problems
  • Review the effectiveness of internal controls in safeguarding assets, achieving efficiency and economy in operations, obtaining compliance with university
  • Develop and maintain documentation on internal audits performed, including a database of information
  • Identify major risk areas and advise management on establishing internal controls, as needed
  • Issue and sign all internal audit reports
  • Develop and maintain an effective staff management program, including recruitment, training, performance, appraisal, and promotion of audit staff
  • Maintain a follow-up system on deficiencies noted in audits and determine the adequacy of responsive action taken
  • Monitor preparation of the budget for the internal audit office and responsible for expenditures
  • Perceive risks in governance, risk management, and control processes
  • Investigate instances of alleged fraud and material misconduct
  • Facilitate and coordinate work with external auditors, state and federal agencies, and external consultants
  • Maintain independence and objectivity with management

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 This position plans, directs and executes the annual audit plan including identifying the audit population, designing the audit program for scheduled areas of risk, and directing the activities of audit staff working in the field.

 Currently, this position has four (4) individuals reporting to it.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  •  Understanding of audit standards and leading internal audit practices
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex technical materials, financial reports and legal documents to define complex problems and prepare solutions or arguments
  • Ability to collect and analyze complex numerical and language data and reach logical conclusions and prepare reports
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Accurately evaluate situations
  • Demonstrate good judgment and strength of character
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or related field required with ten (10) years of professional experience in auditing or accounting
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or other auditing certification

Desired:

  • Experience in university auditing
  • Experience in EDP auditing
  • Master’s degree

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  •  An adequate range of body motion and mobility is required to enable the individual to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodation.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, brief standing or walking, occasional bending and stooping, lifting and carrying office equipment and other items such as files, ledgers, etc., weighing up to ten (10) pounds, with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to travel by air and/or surface, public and/or private conveyance.
