Post-Award Specialist
Job Description:
Reporting to the Director, Grants and Contracts, the Post Award Specialist will be responsible for setting up all awards and award budgets, monitoring and administering extramural contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements from a wide variety of funding sources and all Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center generated funds and cost share commitments. The Post Award Specialist will provide input in developing processes for the department and provide innovative solutions to diverse types of problems and situations by applying university, state, federal, and private sector policies and procedures. The Post Award Specialist will also ensure that costs to the Ag Center fund are reasonable, allowable, and allocable under all cost principles.
Duties:
- Review and negotiate acceptable grant terms consistent with Federal and State law and university policy consistent with the Sponsor’s requirements.
- Responsible for reviewing and negotiating contracts, subcontracts, no-cost extensions, budget revisions, and contract amendments for assigned departments and centers.
- Maintain all related post-award records, including documents and communications, which support recorded financial activity and adjustments.
- Serve as a liaison between Principal investigators and sponsors.
- Advise faculty/PI on budget adjustments and revisions necessary to meet the Sponsor’s requirements.
- Manage budget, reporting, and compliance timelines through the lifecycle of the grant or contract.
- Review and approve expenditures for compliance and adherence to sponsor guidelines.
- Be familiar with Grants.gov, Fastlane (NSF),eRA Commons (NIH), ezFedGrants.
- Communicate with the Pre-Award office to ensure accurate proposal information is maintained on file.
- Prepare and/or submit various reports required by federal and sponsoring agencies.
- Participate in the development of campus communications, training, and outreach programs.
- Maintain internal tracking of all research activities and produce necessary reports as needed.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities:
- Fundamental interpersonal skills in a professional environment
- Excellent accounting as well as familiarity with regulations governing (i.e.,2 CFR 200) general accounting practices for local, state, and federal entities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to analyze data and formulate conclusions.
- Ability to learn changing technologies related to grants and contracts management.
- Proficient use of computers; requires solid working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to create high-quality written documents.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/tasks simultaneously.
- Proactively resolve problems and issues promptly
- Excellent customer service orientation
- Aptitude in mathematics, financial management, and/or accounting
- Deadline-oriented; work well under pressure
Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines.
- Ability to operate a keyboard if required to perform essential job functions.
- Ability to read and interpret documents.
- Ability to travel if required to perform essential job functions.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- Official college transcript.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a heavy workload.
- Ability to use discretion and good judgment when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrates competence in the use of spreadsheets.
