Residency Coordinator
Position Overview:
The Residency Coordinator serves a vital role in supporting the development and success of teacher candidates enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate initial certification programs within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Southern University and A&M College. This includes all undergraduate programs and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) – an alternative certification graduate program.
The Residency Coordinator ensures all clinical experience placements are aligned with state and national standards and institutional expectations. This individual also oversees and facilitates the submission of all necessary licensure documentation to the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE), including initial certification, residency, internship, and practitioner license applications.
Key Responsibilities:
Residency and Clinical Placement Coordination
- Coordinate year-long residency/internship placements for all initial certification candidates in collaboration with program faculty, university supervisors, district partners, and school-based mentor teachers.
- Maintain strong, professional relationships with partner school districts to ensure quality placements that support candidate development.
- Schedule, track, and confirm placement logistics for each candidate, including verifying mentor qualifications and school site compliance.
- Monitor residency/internship hours and ensure documentation aligns with LDOE and CAEP requirements
- Attend LDOE professional development involving teacher preparation, certification, and teacher evaluation
Licensure and Certification Support
- Prepare and submit all required documentation to LDOE for:
- Initial teacher certification (Level 1)
- Practitioner’s license (Level 3)
- Year-long residency/internship approvals
- Maintain accurate records of candidate licensure data and communicate regularly with students regarding the status of their certification.
Standards Compliance and Program Support
- Maintain a thorough understanding of CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) and Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) standards related to clinical experiences.
- Support the implementation of institutional processes to ensure compliance with both state and national accreditation expectations.
- Collaborate with the School of Education leadership team to prepare documentation and evidence for state audits/evaluations and CAEP accreditation reviews.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to clinical experience design, evaluation, and reporting.
Communication and Student Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for teacher candidates regarding residency/internship placement, and licensure processes.
- Offer advisement and guidance on timelines, responsibilities, and required documentation for residency/internship and certification.
- Provide workshops, orientation sessions, and updates to candidates, faculty, and staff regarding clinical expectations and licensing changes.
Data and Reporting
- Manage databases tracking clinical placements, mentor teacher assignments, and candidate licensure status.
- Generate and submit regular reports on placement progress, candidate performance, and certification outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure all data is maintained with a high level of confidentiality and accuracy in accordance with university and state guidelines.
Recruitment and Outreach
- Support the recruitment of prospective teacher candidates for undergraduate and graduate initial certification programs.
- Participate in outreach activities, such as school visits, information sessions, university fairs, and virtual events, to promote the School of Education’s teacher preparation programs.
- Collaborate with faculty, admissions, and school district partners to identify and attract high-potential teacher candidates.
- Assist in the development of recruitment materials and communications targeted toward diverse and high-need district populations.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required in a related field; Master’s degree in education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum Louisiana teacher certification is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in education, preferably in teacher preparation, student support services, or certification/licensure coordination.
- Strong knowledge of Louisiana Department of Education certification processes and requirements.
- Familiarity with CAEP accreditation standards, particularly Standard 2 (Clinical Partnerships and Practice).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in higher education or with educator preparation programs.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, data entry platforms, and student information systems.
Work Environment:
- Professional office environment located on campus at Southern University and A&M College.
- Occasional travel to partner schools and professional meetings may be required.
