Assistant Professor in Food Science
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SUAREC) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month Assistant Professor position in food science to help establish the Food Science research program. Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research, the successful candidate will coordinate a food-science research portfolio that links laboratory discovery with community application. The appointee will also serve the department, the University, and nearby communities by sharing expertise that reduces regional food insecurity and nutrition disparities, thereby advancing the mission and growth of the first Nutrition Hub in the nation, located at Southern University in Baton Rouge. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as institutional needs evolve.
Major Responsibilites:
Rebuild SUAREC Food Science research program and infrastructure by modernizing laboratories, acquiring new equipment, forming research partnerships, and securing funds that drive innovation and enrich students' learning.
Collaborate with the USDA Nutrition Hub to create community partnerships, distribute evidence-based nutrition resources, and expand research and training for underserved populations.
Conduct studies that tackle nutrition challenges in Louisiana and demonstrate measurable benefits for local communities.
Provide technical assistance to stakeholders and train extension specialists, research staff, students, and others across all food-science disciplines.
Mentor undergraduate and graduate students on research projects and theses.
Actively seek competitive, extramural grants to grow the research unit's funding base.
Publish peer-reviewed articles and other scientific manuscripts derived from the research program's findings.
Participate in professional meetings and conferences
Engage in state and international development activities and support on-site demonstrations, workshops, seminars, health fairs, and symposiums.
Collaborate with internal and external scientists on projects that align with the goals of SUAREC and strengthen the mission of the entire unit.
Minimal Qualifications:
Ph.D. in food science, human nutrition, or biochemistry. Proven skill in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, university administration, and external researchers
