Soil and Plant Scientist Research Assistant

Job Description:

The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center seeks a motivated and skilled Soil and Plant Scientist Research Assistant to support applied research and field studies in soil health, plant sciences, and advanced agricultural technology. This position will play a critical role in intergration soil and plant science expertise with drone-based data collection, photogrammetry, and geospatial interpretation to supporting cutting-edge research activities. 

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Soil and Plant Sciences or closely related field.
  • FAA Certified Drone Pilot
  • Demonstrated skills in photogrammetry drone and satellite data interpretation.
  • Soil field applied science and soil laboratory skills

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field and laboratory analyses of soils, including sampling, testing, and interpretation of soil health indicators.
  • Operate and maintain unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for agricultural research, including photogrammetry and satellite image interpretation.
  • Support data-driven modeling for soil and crop management using drone and satellite imagery.
  • Assist in the design, execution, and documentation of field experiments and applied research trials.
  • Maintain accurate and organized research recordsk, data sets, and reports.
  • Collaborate with faculty and research teams to meet project objectives.
  • Support grant proposal preparation, reporting, and outreach activities.
