JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering requests approval for a postdoctoral researcher position in the field of advanced manufacturing engineering. This position is required to fill personnel requirement of NSF HBCU-Excellence in Research that focuses on metal additive manufacturing. The project focuses on developing and characterization, of additively manufactured materials for applications in structural and aerospace industries. This is a full-time, 12-month position. The successful candidate will be expected to have experience in metal additive manufacturing like EBPBF, LPBF, LP OED/materials characterization SEM, XRD, TEM are desirable. The candidate is also expected to be a team player and confonTl to the safety and environmental guidelines of the university. In addition, the candidate is expected to keep records and publish and present experimental results. The candidate is expected to work at Southern University and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

Responsibilities:


The Research Associate will:
(1) Operate and maintain metal AM systems (MM-LPBF, LP-DED, and wire-laser DED) and perform basic post-processing (e.g., wire EDM).
(2) Oversee daily lab safety compliance, scheduling, and vendor communications for maintenance or repair.
(3) Supervise and train undergraduate/graduate students on equipment use and research protocols.
(4) Coordinate project tasks, sample fabrication schedules, and communication with faculty investigators.
(5) Lead outreach demonstrations and workshops to introduce metal AM technologies to local high-school teachers and students.
(6) Contribute to research execution, data analysis, and reporting.
(7) Co-author publications, conference presentations, and proposals, with opportunities to lead proposal development.

Qualifications:


Required:
(1) Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
(2) Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing (metal AM preferred), machining, or related laboratory systems.
(3) Strong organizational skills and ability to supervise and mentor students.
(4) U.S. work authorization.

Preferred:
(1) Expertise in operating metal AM platforms (LPBF, DED, or similar).
(2) Experience with CAD/CAM, materials characterization, or powder handling.
(3) Demonstrated ability to co-author publications or proposals.
(4) Interest in STEM outreach and workforce development.
2. Minimum Qualification: Specific Experience: Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing (metal AM preferred), machining, or related laboratory systems.
Strong organizational skills and ability to supervise and mentor students. U.S. work authorization.
3. Preferred Qualification: Specific Experience: Expertise in operating laser powder bed fusion, laser powder direct energy deposition, wire laser sirect energy
deposition. Experience with CAD/CAM, materials characterization, or powder handling. Demonstrated ability to co-author publications.
