SUNO welcomes substance abuse and addictions expert for Substance Abuse Awareness Day

Southern University, New Orleans' (SUNO) Students for the Prevention and Education of Substance Abuse (SPESA) will host Substance Abuse Awareness Day on Tuesday, September 29th at 11:00 a.m.

The program will be in the Park Campus Cafeteria at 6400 Press Drive, and will feature a keynote address by substance abuse and addictions expert Anthony Lowery.

Lowery is an assistant professor of Substance Abuse Counseling at SUNO.

He is also a licensed addiction counselor, a board certified compulsiveg gambling counselor, a co- occurring disorders professional and a registered clinical cupervisor.

He has 18 years experience in substance abuse counseling with adults and teens and deals with addictions, detoxification, treatment, relapse prevention, aftercare, and continual care.

Lowery has worked with the Volunteers of America Substance Abuse Program, Odyssey House Louisiana, Inc., the Metropolitan Human Services District, as well as a host of other programs and organizations.

Having earned his associate of arts in Substance Abuse Counseling from SUNO, Lowery also earned his bachelor of science in health and physical education from the University of Arkansas and his master of arts in community counseling from Our Lady of Holy Cross College.

He is chairman of the board of the Substance Abuse Counselors of New Orleans District 1, a member of the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors & Trainers, Inc., and a board member of the National Association for Addiction Professionals.
