Fulbright educators to present 'My Hometown' lectures at SU
The three-part series is sponsored by Southern's Foreign Language Department and will be held over several weeks in October and November. All presentations will be held in room 323 of T.T. Allain Hall.
The lecture series will begin with Taiwan, the "hometown" of Phillip Elliott, a professor of Spanish and Chinese. Elliott was awarded a one-year Fulbright Award in Taiwan for the academic year 2008-2009. His presentation will be held at noon, Thursday, October 15.
The second presentation will feature Tanzania, the "hometown" of Charange Mandari, a Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant.
Mandari's presentation will be at noon, Thursday, October 29.
The third event will focus on Senegal, the "hometown" of Marie Pauline Correa, a Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant. Correa's presentation will be held at noon, Thursday, November 12.
The Fulbright Program is an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government, and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries.
The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) enables educators to refine their teaching skills, and extend their knowledge of cultures and customs of the United States. FLTA teach language courses, and supervise language labs, and lead language table discussions.
"The lecture series gives the opportunity for recipients of this prestigious Fulbright award to share with the university students and faculty much insight into the culture and customs of their 'hometowns,'"said Linda Lassiter, chair of foreign languages, and supervisor of FLTA.
