SUBR to hold Scotlandville charrette workshop

A series of meetings mapping the future design of the Scotlandville area will be the focus of a five-day workshop coordinated by Southern University's School of Architecture and its Urban + Rural Community Design Research Center.

Kent Butler, associate dean in the Department of Planning at the University of Texas at Austin and Nancy McPherson, Louisiana State Director of American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will highlight a group of community and education representatives who will share their expertise at the meetings.

The design meetings, commonly called charrettes, will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., April 13-17, on the 2nd floor of the School of Architecture on the Baton Rouge campus.

The free workshops will provide an overview of the community input made over the past six months to a team of representatives from the Urban + Rural Community Design Research Center. Center representatives have received recommendations from Scotlandville residents seeking better police protection, community beautification, bus transportation, economic development and more availability to healthcare.

Other speakers for the event include: Brian Marshall, director of the Capital Area Transit System (CATS), Yavonka Archaga, executive director of Resources for Independent Living, and Sandra Brown, professor, SUBR School of Nursing.

The input from community members will set the framework for the Scotlandville Comprehensive Community Development Plan.
