Houston native named chief student marshal for fall 2010

Bean, a 22-year-old Houston native, will lead the graduating class during Southern's fall commencement exercises at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 10, in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
The Thurgood Marshall High School graduate will receive a bachelor of science degree in accounting from the College of Business. Bean earned a 3.71 GPA at Southern.
"It's an honor. A blessing," said Bean of being named the chief student marshal. "I humbly accept it because I could not have made it without God."
Bean said she feels the College of Business has helped prepare her for the business world.
"They (College of Business professors) prepared me on how to conduct myself in the business world," said Bean. "They pushed me a lot to bring out my potential. It showed me that nothing comes easy."
During a summer internship Bean was able to put her skills to the test while working for Exxon's America's Regional Controls Pool Accounting Unit in Houston.
"I was accounting for gas, which is different from accounting for merchandise," said Bean. "It was good to see that accounting is more than what you see in the classroom." Bean also said she was able to sit down with COE's and managers to see how they conducted themselves in the business world while on her internship.
After graduation, Bean plans to pursue her master's of business administration degree, prepare for the Certified Public Accountant Exam and one day own an accounting firm.
Bean is the daughter of Richard and Mary Bean Sr. She has a sister, Daphne Brownlee and a brother, Richard Bean Jr.
