Preliminary figures show SUNO enrollment up seven percent from previous year

Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) continues to climb closer to pre-Katrina enrollment levels as demonstrated by a projected Fall 2012 enrollment of 3,480 students. This number represents a more than seven percent increase over the University's Fall 2011 figures. Included in that number are 274 first-time Freshmen. University officials will not have final enrollment data until after Friday, September 14, 2012, the final day for students to pay their fees. The deadline was extended by a week due to the impact of Hurricane Isaac.

"So many students have been affected by the storm and its aftermath," stated SUNO Chancellor Victor Ukpolo, "the administration felt it necessary and proper to grant them some time to get their personal affairs in order and to get themselves ready for the academic year. We don't want Isaac to be a reason that students are unable to receive their educations so we’re going to assist them in whatever ways are possible."

Chancellor Ukpolo remains optimistic about the University’s growth moving forward. "We believe that SUNO is a highly accessible, affordable and viable option for higher education here in New Orleans and throughout the surrounding region. Even with our more stringent admissions standards, we continue to see growth both locally as well as globally with a dozen new international students joining our community this fall. We are very excited about this year, and we know that we must continue to be extremely active in recruiting students so that we can build on this success moving forward."
